I've been working on this project for around 6 months now, but I thought I'd share some pictures from the beginning to now. The shop is 27' x 31'. It's a bit unique as it's built into the hillside. The entire yard was re-sculpted...all the dirt where the shop is was moved to make a flat area above the shop (behind the house), and the lower area was levelled. The yard used to be a steady, fairly un-usable slope, now there are 2 usable flat levels. The shop is for long term projects, which Is why I went with one big door...I wont be moving vehicles in and out on a regular basis.

Apparently the attachments end up in alphabetical order, but I guess you guys can figure out the order ;) I'll be using the shop to work on my 4x4's, and restiring my GF's VW bettle. I've had many other VW's, so I wouldnt be surpriese if several other pass through the shop. I have alot more pics, but I'll post them later.

the back wall acts as a retaining wall, so I needed to get an engineer to design it. It had to be 8+" thick, and LOADED with re-inforcement. It ended up adding a fair bit to the over-all cost.

Looking good Tim...is that Wilkie in the background?

I'm up in Duncan myself, and happen to turn wrenches on beetles too. You wouldn't happen to be on the vvwc.ca site would you?

The ceiling height is 9 and a bit inches, and the attic is 7 ish feet in the centre, and will be used for light storage. I would have gone heigher but I was restricted bu the local regulations. Becasue of the hillside, I ended up being able to make it a bit taller than if it was a level lot.

I've posted a few things. I've been to the last 8 volksfests at least, and my Gf's beetle was in a few shows. It even won her class once  . I've has 2 vans, a Ghia, type 3, and wrenched on the GF 2 beetles (1st one RIP) :willy_nil

Well done on the win! I've been to most of the Volksfests over the years, always a good time. I've had a slew of bugs over the years, and am down to just 4 for the moment.

I'm "Clay" in the vvwc forums

Nice set up! I am from the interior of BC. Williams Lake. In the next year or two I plan on building a shop about the same size as yours, similar terrain situation as well. Have you been keeping track of your costs? I would be really interested, if you care to share the cost info. I hope to keep mine at about 20K.

I'm doing a 30' x 30' on Vancouver Island as well...been keeping a spreadsheet of materials/costs, which you're more than welcome to once it's pretty much done.

If you're going to do most of the work yourself, you should manage close to 20k, but it depends on what happens with material costs as well, of course.

These three holes are for a tubing bender stand, which slides into the holes. There is a steel "receiver", made of 3 1" id pieces of pipe, tied into the mesh in the concrete..not going anywhere

That spreadsheet is exactly what I have been looking for. I'd love to have a copy!

Keep the build pics coming

Thanks,

The drains are just your typical 4" perforated PVC, with lots of 3/4 gravel, filtercloth and backfilled. My municipality requires an independant system for the roof water, which goes into a 3" PVC pipe. There are 3 cleanouts for the 4" pipe, and one for each the 3" and 4" where the solid pipe runs under the yard to a culvert, which drains into the creek across from my place. It sure would save ALOT of $ if I didnt have to do the drains, but I had no choice. Plus the shop is at the bottom of a big hill, so the less ground water around the better. When the big hole was excavated I had a big sump pump that would pump LOTS of water every 2-5 minutes.
