Vidmar repaint.

A few days back I scored a brand new Vidmar for $100.

The tan wasnt cutting it, so i now find myself waiting for the new paint to dry...

Before:

The cab, and a few drawers after a first coat.

Rustoleum Safety Red / Gloss Black applied with a 4" foam roller.

Removed the individual drawer latches so they stay silver... Then sanded and degreased everything.

The front bottom edge is going to have a strip of chrome or black diamond plate cut down and installed as a kick panel.

Picked up some indoor/outdoor carpet to line the drawers with as well.

Gave the cab and drawers another coat....

I switched from the gloss black enamel to flat black enamel. Much better.

Also took advantage of the dry time, and knocked out what I've been procrastinating on: cutting the drawer liners.

They turned out perfect.

Will you be using dividers? It will be a challenge bolting the dividers with the carpet installed. Those drawers work best with bolted dividers.

No, no dividers are going in this one.

I only use dividers nowadays for hardware cabinets.

This is another vidmar I'm just gonna use for large/heavy item storage... MIG liners, regulators, extension cords, battery packs, drillbit sets, etc...

For what it's worth, I've used thin indoor/outdoor carpet with Vidmar dividers before and it worked/looked great. I don't hardly ever change my drawer layouts, and rivets worked perfectly to stretch the carpet and compress everything down so there isn't any interference with divider height/drawer closing.

I wouldn't recommend rivets however, if you put greasy/dirty stuff inside, because when you DO want to replace the grungy liners... Your gonna be drilling em back out.

Also, heat the rivets with a lighter before seating them, that way when you poke em through they seal the carpet.

Yep, I prefer to roll paint everything I can.

I used Rustoleum Enamel.

I used Wooster 4" high density FOAM rollers... Yep, I used foam rollers for oil-based enamel.

Got the rollers (2 pack) at Lowes for $5.

I did a quick sandpaper scuff with 220, then degreased with acetone.

My cab was powder-coated a khaki color... I chose to forego primer because it's a light hue base coat.

With red paint, underlying color plays a major role in how many coats it takes to cover. If you have a dark-colored cab, I'd HIGHLY recommend priming with a grey base. It won't require near as many coats of red later to cover the "shadows".

I did 2 thin coats.

Tuesday it was 80 degrees out when I did the first coat... It was dry to the touch within 4 hours or so.

Wednesday, again at about 2PM, also 80 degrees, I did the second coat.

Thursday, at about noon, I reassembled the cab and moved it into its place in my shop.

As a precaution, I don't set anything against/on the painted surfaces for a week... just in case a ripple or impression took hold and fully hardened. This is just a paranoia I have.

That doesn't interfere with loading the drawers down though, and I am still looking for a scrap of Rock Maple to bolt on top anyways.

Yes sir, the enamel is available at Lowes.

It is smooth/level as can be, the thinner really helps with the thick oil based enamel.

Nice work. Vidmar are top notch. Good choice on the roller. The red kills it for me though.
I'd have gone with black, gray, or tan.

I can understand that.

I personally don't like flashy colors, but "safety" red and flat black seems like "traditional" toolbox colors and I actually like the way it looks up next to all the industrial gray steel lockers and tables, etc.

I'd never do black... Down here in the hill country we have lots of chalk-white caliche dust that settles on everything... Kind of the opposite reason I will never use white.

One day, I'm gonna gut my entire shop and have every steel cabinet, locker, toolbox, and table powder coated a hunter green and/or khaki.
