I recently reorganized my socket drawer after adding rails of 3/8" Semi Deep sockets. I looked at all the options and decided to go with the Magrails. They just seemed a little cleaner and user friendly. I had been using Mechanics Timesaver but wanted to get each rail in one line, and be able to grab one entire rail by itself.
I bought a jobber pack and a few extras and went to town. Man those magnets are strong! Difficult to lift the rails off the drawer. I would often just stick my old holder right near the work area on the steel. They had the rubber magnetic sheet on the bottom. The vim rails stick so hard I would worry about damaging finishes.

So I ordered some adhesive backed 1"X1/8" foam tape. It is akin to EVA (tennis shoe foam) tape, or black weatherstrip tape. As soon as I put a strip on the back I knew this was a good decision for me, so I did the rest. It tames the magnets well. They will still hold their place in the drawer with no issue, but easier to manipulate.

The shallows and semi deep have no problem holding horizontally, the deeps want to fall off. If this is something you need, just use 1"X1/16" tape as the 1/8" is just slightly too weak. Vertically everything holds great.

Strong enough to hold well, easy enough to pull off. I will try to remember to review after some months of use as to its longer term performance. KIMG0758.JPG

Love magrails!! expensive habit but, they're worth it. :bounce: Oddly, I've never wanted to reduce the magnet's strength though. Probably because I wheel a cart close to the car I'm working on and not moving racks of sockets. Great Hack though!!

I work on a lot of different stuff. On a lift, in the shop, in the driveway, on a trailer, in a house. I generally grab a socket rail, extension rail, ratchet and go. It is a lot of effort to get my toolboxes moving for the annual clean behind!

For those who would like something on the base of their Magrail you might consider 3M Gripping Material. Available on 1" wide rolls and is adhesive backed . it's approximately .020 thick, soft and has a super grip. Has very little effect on the holding power of your Magrail. I have purchased it from FindTape.com in the past and they seem to have good prices but many places sell it.
