Vinegar and wood

Can someone tell me the effects of vinegar on wood? I read up on a bunch of the rust removal threads and want to derust my hammers but I don't want to pull out the wooden handles. I want to just submerge the metal part of the hammer but that would mean the vinegar would still come in contact with the top of the handle. Would the vinegar hurt and degrade the wood in any way? :headscrat Thanks

I do it all the time and it has little effect on the wood. It might darken the area in contact with the wood a bit, but when this happens, I submerge the entire piece into vinegar to get it evened out.

I was just afraid that the vinegar would corrode the wood and have the handle snap while I'm swinging away. Thanks for the help!

I use vinegar to clean all my butcher blocks and wood countertops. It works perfectly both as as a disinfectant and cleaner.
