Vintage 3lb hand sledge ID? Horseshoe with an 'A' inside.

Made in USA and clearly old, but no idea of the maker. Any ideas? Picked it up cheap today. Might try my hand at wire whipping the handle.

I've epoxied some of the minor splits in the handle and will try wire whipping tomorrow. Time to learn a new skill.

Is the handle cracked? I can't tell from the picture. Wire whipping is a good way to save one that is cracked or split.

It has a couple of splits starting. I epoxied them overnight and will wire whip today. Main problem area is the 2.5" below the head.

Nice hammer--I've got one and use it fairly often.

Here's my first attempt ar wire whipping. If I had to do it again, I'd use smaller diameter wire so I could wrap it tighter.

Pro tip: don't search for "wire whipping videos." You've been warned.
