Can anyone here tell me anything about this little square jaw adjustable wrench with a screwdriver tip? There are no names or maker marks anywhere. I was searching online and could only find one other example like it, and it sold on eBay last year for about $70USD (Almost $100 Canadian). I was surprised at that price and would like to know more about this one. That eBay listing didn't provide any history on the wrench or it's possible uses.

I've asked in a couple other places, but no one seems to know anything about it. I was thinking maybe a vintage bicycle or motorcycle wrench, but really don't know.

Thanks. Here's a couple pics.

It looks like a variant of the bike wrench that Billings first patented here in the US in the late 1800's, followed quickly by Abingdon ("King ****") in England. The design, functional and construction, is identical. I have seen the Abingdon versions with no markings and also only minimal or odd markings, such as "English Made". I'm on the road or I would look deeper. But I would start there.

Thanks for your response. I was thinking bike wrench too after seeing the Billings wrenches. The square jaws on this one are definitely unique.

I've never seen one like that before. The way the channel is exposed below the adjusting nut is a little different, but everything else (the milled "way" for the dynamic jaw, etc) is characteristic of the Billings patent (212,298 - 1879). I've seen references to these screw-wrenches being called "assemblers" wrenches. Assembling what, I don't know, but a square opening and a screwdriver might come in handy for it!

I found this British Made version in my pile of stuff. Flat jaws, though. The notched jaws are interesting.

I've got the same wrench, lardy, but marked a little different. The "BRITISH MADE" is enclosed by parentheses, oddly, with what appears to be a part number, both markings located on the slide of the dynamic jaw. No markings on the other jaw or anywhere else. It looks Abingdon to me.
