When I got this, it was just a bare pump and in it's previous life with my ex-father-in-law it took about twenty minutes to build up enough pressure to fill a tire. It's a Devilbiss 120 and I'm not sure of the vintage but believe it's 40's or 50's. The valve seating surfaces on the valves were buggered up at some point, which explained the almost non-existent pressure/volume. I bought a set of new valves (shocked they were available) and kept the old valves as they are repairable if needed in the future. I bought the tank with pressure switch off eBay and later found a one-horse (total overkill) JM/JP motor, also off of eBay. The motor was real cheap because of the odd shaft with no keyway but with a taper lock bushing and the low torque it works very well. I bought the fittings, stainless tubing and filter/muffler from McMaster Carr and it went together pretty well. It runs VERY quiet (You can stand next to it while it's running and hold a conversation without raising your voice.) which makes it great to have in the basement. I measured the output and it's slightly better than 2 cfm at 110 psi which is perfect for its intended purpose.

Hey new to the forum, but I saw this thread an thought this might be the best place to track down information on this compressor. It has Scaife & Sons 1936 stamped on the compressor with Feather Valves. Air is compressed and pushed through a Worthington radiator. Unit appears to be PTO driven off a tractor on some sort of makeshift old truck chassis. I can't seem to find any information on something this old or big, especially since it is a 3 cylinder. Any information I could gather would be helpful.

I guess your saying that the oil in the crankcase that I changed is not adequate lube via splash? One thing I do know is with no "load" on the compressor, it pushes oil past the rings with the heads off and running. Not a lot but once it is under pressure the rings seal much better with no noticeable blow by in the output line.

What you say explains why this is so pristine inside. No carbon, no scraping on the cylinder walls, pistons look new, valves required no cleaning at all.. I plan on using it in the corner of the shop for "clean, delicate work' like firearms, antique clock mechanisms act. My other one is noisy and a PITA dragging hose past four vehicle tires, etc.

Thanks for your reply !
Finally sandblasted, painted and built new support structure.
