Previous homeowner left behind his bench grinder. Motor works good. I’m unable to determine the maker of the model because the paint is in bad shape. Also, no indication of the HP on the motor. I’m going to restore this thing, but looking for any possible help on who made this and the motor HP. I’ve attached a few pictures. Appreciate the help.

I personally would not use that as a grinder without shields. Buffer or wire wheel yes, cuz I appreciate my body parts not having holes in them.

No clue who made it, or how much power it has. If you have a current reading DVM you could probably figure out The approximate power rating.

This is not actually a bench grinder. It's a universal electric motor with add-on arbors to hold buffing and grinding wheels. A grinding wheel is mounted and a polishing buff goes onto the other end with the taper. With no tool rests or shields it's going to be pretty risky for grinding and awfully messy for buffing. It is a pretty old motor just from the looks of your pictures but not a "vintage bench grinder" and may not be worth too much more research. If it runs, doesn't shake the pictures off the wall and you're not scared to use it then knock yourself out.
...But I wouldn't.

Just use that motor for a scroll saw or similar need. Then go get a real bench top grinder....they can be had for less than $50. Get at least 6" wheels. I'd guess that motor is 1/4 HP.

Joe, thanks. I see it now as the motor that it is.

No guards, no shields, no tool rests, and exposed electrical terminals without an earth ground. Now what could possibly go wrong?

I have a similar electric motor on my small old Craftsman metal lathe with the same exposed wire connections. Works for me because if I'm reaching back there (or letting that much swarf build up) then I deserve whatever I get.
To use this one with a belt to drive another tool just remove the set screws holding the wheel adapters and slide the sleeves off of the motor shafts and install a pulley from a hardware store. Nice that you can mount the pulley to either end depending on whether you need Clockwise or CCW rotation.

Thanks, Joe. Just trying to familiarize myself with some of these older tools/motors. Currently restoring a Craftsman 113 table saw, which is belt driven. That motor is 1HP.

I’d like to try and use this universal motor for another restoration project if I can find something older to attach it to.

What’s today’s suggested go to for a new bench grinder? Please @ me with responses so I see them. I’m in the market and not sure. Baldor is a bit out of my price range but not looking for junk either. Any suggestions or direction to look in appreciated. Anything at local tab sales or estate sales seem to be harbor freight
