I bought a Vintage Black and Decker drill with a missing plug to connect to an outlet a couple of days ago. Made a trip to Home Depot today for the plug. Wired the new plug and this drill only goes Reverse?

Theres no button to switch it from forward to reverse.

Any ideas on what could be wrong with this drill?

That looks like an old Bell System (or similar company) drill. It was definitely a company tool.

Good looking old drill

Richar D, that's how the reverse works on these old drills. A friend of mine has one it's a pretty neat setup.

Push the drill into the workpiece & it goes forward, pull it out of the workpiece & it goes reverse.

Sounds like it might be a power tapper where it would have to go in reverse to get the tap out of the hole. Looks old enough to be a war time tool as well.

I have a couple of old 1/4" B&D's One was a 13th birthday present. My mom bought it in Gimbals dept store, in 1956. It was painted silver. I think there was a better one that was polished aluminum. The paint was peeling so when I overhauled it, I stripped it and buffed it out until it shone. As I was replacing the cord, I went with a 3 wire and grounded the shell for safety. The other one, I got when a neighbor passed away. It is bare aluminum but has something I have never seen before. The chuck is tightened with an Allen key instead of the normal geared key.
That pressure reverse is a new one on me. That is why these threads are so good. Thanks for sharing.

Reversing is a sure sign, but one other clue the Model 586 is a special tap gun is the RPM is only 400. If it were a general purpose drill the RPM would need to be much faster.

I've never seen one like that. They are getting less common every year. At garage sales, they common ones go for less than $5.00, and they don't go fast. I will still purchase if I see something unusual
