Here's how the non-return valve assembly of your C&L goes together:

The springs on the NRV were broken. I replaced them with the springs that push the flint up in a BIC lighter. I cut the new pip for the NRV from some Viton sheet--70 Duro, 1/16" thick. I use Neat's foot oil for the pump leather.

What part is that? Is that the gland that holds the pump shaft in?

The "dirt" appears to be packing--possibly asbestos. Just pick it out under running water in case it is asbestos. If that part is what I think it is, there shouldn't be a packing in there.

If that's the gland (packing) nut for the valve shaft, not only shouldn't it have packing in it--it compresses the packing around the shaft--but it looks like you have a hairline crack in it that needs fixing.

That's the valve stem packing nut. The handle is the thing at the back you use as a handle.

There should be a tubular graphite packing on the valve stem--the thing that goes through that nut.

can u replace the graphite and whats the valve stem suppose to look like

Hopefully you have it. If not, pretty much any C&L valve stem should fit. Try to find one in better shape than mine!

You can see how I've used Teflon plumber's tape to build up a packing. Graphite was original, but finding one in the correct size might be a challenge.

Both graphite and Teflon can be bought as a packing material. Diameter of various diameters are available. Check the big box stores for quick pick up.

I don't mean to be snide here, but this is a device that burns pressurized gasoline. Pressurized gasoline and flames aren't exactly toys.

Please find a good You Tube or such tutorial on how liquid-fueled blow torches work and how to restore one before proceeding with this.

I have one of these and fear same.

is this brass torch piece suppose to come off to be clean or does it stay on the rod ?
