Vintage Boring head

I bought this today along with a couple of newer Criterion style boring heads. I am guessing it is a shop made boring head. I think it is shop made since the tool marks on the main body are parallel such as would be made by a shaper. The shank is 5/8 as is the hole for the boring bar.

It does look shop made. That will be one heck of an unbalanced mass at speed. Hope the handle is removable. Cool little paperweight.

It's possible that it was stationary and the part getting machined was moving. Could've been used in a turret lathe.

I am pretty sure you are right about that either used in a turret, a fixture on the carriage or in the tailstock.

It would be unbalanced and shake at any but the slowest speeds and the spindle would have to be stopped to advance the cutter. As to the cool factor I think it will work or at least look good with my 2 Pre-WWI Seneca Falls lathes.

-Much as I'd like to take your word about owning the 2 lathes I'll have to see some empirical evidence (photo hint...) that they exist. Rules are rules y'know...
