Vintage Bottle Jack Help

I have an old 8-ton Drednaut bottle jack that I'm trying to rebuild. The steel balls must be stuck in the channel as i cannot get them out. The reason I'm rebuilding it is because it will raise, but not go down. I removed the release valve and fluid shoots out, and the jack will go down, (all this being done with no load) on it. Any suggestions how to get these out? Hopefully someone can have a suggestion.

If memory serves, on some of the drednaught models the release threaded into a piece that caged the balls, it must be removed also. Maybe a picture?

Here is a picture of the jack. I tried to get a close up of the port, there are two side ports with plugs on the side of the jack. It does look like a caged area in the release port, but not sure?

As far as I can tell, it feels like it pushes in. Actually, I tried it again with a thin steel pin, and it does not feel like it pushes in at all.

It’s hard to say, and I’m not real familiar with the drednaut line. Does the release valve that your removed have a cone end or is it flat? What is the history of the jack? Was it purchased in non working condition? Or did it just stop releasing one day? I’m hoping that someone didn’t stick too small of ball in the seat and it’s jammed in there now. I’ve gotten lucky over the years by bouncing the jack on a anvil and dislodging it, or plugging ports and hitting the return with pressurized air.

The release valve has a coned end. I know no history of the jack, was in our shop for many years but hidden in the back. When I retired two years ago, I saved many of the old shop items that probably have not worked for years, and were tossed aside and replaced with new items. Many of these items my dad probably started out with when he first started out, until he could replace them with new more modern items. I did notice a coned washer that does turn where the seal joins. I cannot see down in there real good, so cannot really tell about the steel ball. It does feel like it is rolling around. I will try putting light air pressure down the release shaft to see what happens. How would you change these steel balls? I did order a rebuild kit, that does come with steel balls. I just hate to clean everything up, reassemble, and have it not work. Thank you for helping me, it is much appreciated, Jim

If the release stem is coned, there shouldn’t be a ball between it and the seat. Obviously if someone added a extra component, it could have jammed a ball into the seat. I really can’t tell by the pictures to verify whether the ball is behind or stuck in the seat.

I tried to take a couple more pictures but cannot get close enough down the seat to see it clearly. The ball is behind the seat and seems to move freely.
