Over the weekend while scouting a semi-local swap meet, I managed to procure a probably 60's era Craftsman 10 drawer top chest in relatively decent shape (the ones with the big deep drawer in the center). Kind of a gunmetal gray with orangish-red drawers, and the emblem appears to be aluminum. Had the key (big shock), only a few small dents, some minor surface rust, and appears to be missing the center locking bar. At $30, it's probably not a "you ****" type purchase, but I like it nonetheless.

What I'm wondering is if there is a date code stamped on these anywhere. I'm sure it's not a hard to find piece, but I want to be certain before dragging it into the paint booth of doom for a custom job. I can't find the @#$%ing camera, so hopefully someone can help out based on my description.

I also found a small gray "Dunlap" handbox for $5 in near perfect condition (never heard of it, but it is proudly stamped made in the USA). I didn't even pull the tool tray out before purchasing it, and I got a pleasant surprise inside of 4 vintage 6" machinists' rules (two Starretts, a Brown and Sharpe and a Dunlap). My granddad says he remembers either Sears or Gamble's selling Dunlap - anyone got some background on this outfit?

I have my dad's Craftsman lower roll away cabinet .. grey with red/orange drawers - same emblem. If I recall he bought it in the late 60s or early 70s... he used it at work and I can't recall the exact year he started.. I think in 1970 or thereabout.

Patent No. 3393951

Maybe this will point you in the right direction....

Finally recognized my need for a 'central' tool box.
Snooped around on CL and found these old timers.
Decent items in decent condition for a decent price. And they're red. Two BlackHawks and a Proto.
I'm hoping to clean and polish before filling them up.
Wheels are not stock,I might upgrade.
Skies.
Jay.
P.S. What is the material you line the drawers with to prevent rust?
P.P.S. Dunno if these are actually vintage.Anyone know?

This is a photo of mine. Looked all over for a model number on it and could not find one. On the inside of the top storage area, about 6 inches to the left of the lock, there is something stamped. See photos.

Thats either the Patent No. or Model No. ... I have two stamped numbers on my roll away .. one clearly states "Patent No".

That's the exact same box I picked up, it's just not in as good of shape as yours.

The stampings on my box "Made in USA 0469" are a manufacturing date code, I believe. Manufactured April, 1969. I do not believe they are a model number or a patent number.

It will be stamped on it somewhere. My latest vintage Craftsman aquisition was stamped in the top of the box on the left side. I've also seen drawers stamped. It's there somewhere keep looking you'll find it.
