A lot of power tools were sold with the motor separately so it can use what you have or can find for a reasonable price. I'd put a 1750 RPM 1/2HP on it. You can ask some woodsmiths what ratio but I'd use a bigger pulley on the motor than what you find on the jointer drum. You need to spin the cutter head to about 4500 RPM. That was what was in the manual for that size 2 bladed machines.

Here's a calculator.

Also, regarding the post by FrankLee, it depends a lot on what you are going to do with it. Edge jointing doesn't need much power.

I had that jointer at one time. 1/2HP, 3450 RPM, cradle base, capacitor start.

6" cutter-head, 3 knives.

If you have a model number, look up the manual on www.vintagemachinery.org .

It will likely need 3/4HP & 3450 RPM

Mine came with a 1/2 hp Craftsman 3450 rpm motor. The manual can be downloaded at that VM site and it recommends at least a 1/2hp- 3/4hp motor with 3450 rpm and supplied pulley to produce the speed needed for the cutter head. I have the OEM pulley in my ebay store, I could give you a serious deal on itif you are interested but it looks like a standard 2" O.D. 1/2" V pulley.

Just remember that 3450 motors are harder to find used at a good price. You could do as well with the 3/4 HP 1750 also not as easy to find as a 1/2 HP. Unless you're doing a lot of wide jointing the 1/2 will do the job. 1/3 or 1/4 are out of the question. Also remember to cord it with 12 ga. and run the cord to a known 20 amp outlet. That way you won't suffer from much voltage drop.
