It appears to be mechanical function instead of hydraulics. May not be a disadvantage per say but on heavy loads it might be. I have used chain falls to swap engines and they do work. Just saying, that you will have to use it some to decide if it works for you.

I do like the industrial look.

I found out recently that these early cherry pickers are "Highly Desirable Collectables" So, keep your eyes open for a deal and flip for huge profits!

That is so cool! I don’t think I would ever want to sell one either. The building it is in looks pretty awesome too

The ad is from late 1922, i wonder if available before B. S. took over. Is there a serial number on it?

I drove from So Cal. to Arkansaw to pick up mine a few years ago.
It's a little different but the same era

Don, that was definitely worth the drive. I love the fabricated truss.

Left alone or restored, you can't go wrong with your old hoist.

I really like the braking system on it Pull the pullhandle down and the cam on the end of the handle releases the front wheels , let the handle spring back up and that baby will not roll

Hello, I left you a message on another website as well. We are making a movie where we would like to use this Canton Crane as a featured prop. Can we rent it from you? Can we refurbish it for you in exchange for the rental? Can we purchase from you? Do you know of anyone selling this exact model in your peer group?

Please call me at 818 400 4111 or email me at [email protected] to discuss.
Thank you so much for your time and help.

Where PSCo works there 2 Cantons, the 1 in the OP and this 1. Look close, photos should enlarge.
Propmaster, are you asking about the pipe ones or the older cast iron ones. Time frame of your project?

Propmaster44. What is the name of the production company? Who are the producers?
I knoweth whereof I speaketh.
I rented the truck in my avatar out for commercials when I lived in L.A.
The photos below were for an AT&T commercial. I was paid $700 for one day of shooting.
I also was approached by several unknown individuals who wanted to use the truck in various music videos, but gee, they didn't have the names of the producers, or production company. Scams are getting more creative and more common.
VERIFY everything before you allow someone to haul off your property for a "film production".

818-400-xxxx is a San Fernando Valley cell phone.
Before I ever allowed my truck to be in a shoot, I always verified a physical address and land-line phone # for the production company. I'd speak with someone in management at that company, and verify the person who had approached me. And I had a contract that specified what would happen if the truck was damaged. (And it was on the AT&T shoot).

googling his complete email as "[email protected]" Gives you a bit of idea who he may be. Then taking his name, and his "him" and googling again.

Or its a well constructed ruse, with a good backstory.

A local here has a Canton Crane/Hoist identical to the one pictured in the ad that's rusting away outside on his property, along with hundreds of other early vehicles/parts from the 1930s-1960s, that he's asking $1000 for. He also has a 1950s model Hein-Werner jack I've had my eye on rusting away nearby that he's priced at $75.

I had the pleasure of visiting Wenchguy's self-titled "One Geezer Operation". It's a fantastic collection of old treasures (yup, the kind that GJ vintage tool-lovers drool over).

Wrenches, wrenches, and more wrenches for sure but also vintage tools of all kinds, machines (powered & unpowered), mechanical devices (some still awaiting ID), old generators (large & small), and so...so much more. Sweet old bench vises? Sure! but not presented how you'd expect: most are pure in-service users. There was an old craftsman vise sitting on a drum outside the pole-barn. "You want it? Take it". A pair huge war-time generators fired up effortlessly, and a rare monster Cat serial #1 generator sat close by. Oh, and look over there: a smaller generator from a B-29! True, vintage blacksmith-forged tools? Who's got 'em? Mike does.

One of the coolest things there? The rotating cast-iron screw bin. Mike's museum-quality restoration of this beautiful, intricate, and functional screw-storage bin is superb. You can get a glimpse in the video above, but the video clip does not do it justice. It deserves a post of its own.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Canton! You just don't see these beauties every day.

found some misplaced information, 3ton for a no.4, no wonder alot are busted. booklet date unknown. 78C384D54BE44C738CACF58226613A60.jpg
Mike, that's sweet little catalog. You gotta get it into the ITCL. I don't see any detailed Canton cats other than ads.

Agreed about the questionable load rating of these old Cantons (and this was from an era when most ratings seemed generally conservative). They were rugged beasts for sure, but I can't imagine the #4 Canton lifting 6000#....not even once!

I'm quite sure that #8 will not fit on my 3/4 ton pickup, haa.
The pic I've attached shows an old Google Street View shot that was sent by @Mark Stansbury. This is the #4 Canton that's just a tad longer than the 8' box (when laid down on its side).

That #8 Canton in post #37 is a monster indeed.CantonNo4.jpg
