Hi. I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post on this forum.

About 15 years ago I inherited some vintage Craftsman and Snap On tools. Recently I went through my boxes and separated a lot of tools that I don't use. I'm thinking about selling them on eBay or the classified section here. Does anyone know what would be a fair price? Do you have any idea when they were made? Thanks in advance.

I have three Craftsman sockets that I am not at all familiar with. They are marked 3/16W, 1/4W, and 3/8W. They look to be in good condition.

I also have a socket set by Craftsman that looks really old. They are marked Craftsman and have an H following the name. The tray looks to be original to the set but has no markings.

The sockets are not a rusty as it appears in the picture. They have a yellowish coating that has a lot of dirt embedded in it.

Thanks for looking and for any help.

Pic(s) are not showing up.

Sounds like your 3 mystery sockets are Whitworth thread, an old and mostly obsolete British standard.

Lots of folks here might be interested in your old Craftsman socket set, including me. I'll send you a PM.

The pictures show up in FireFox but not in Google Chrome. That's kind of weird.

Thanks for the info.

I was the one who bought the four whitworth sockets for $8.00 each plus shipping, D42 can verify that, but I don't have that 1/4W you have pictured. I'll send you a PM, but yeah please save that one for me I already have the other three thanks!

I have to be more careful... I had a partial set of Craftsman Whitworth sockets that I gave away to a neighbor who had a friend that had an old Triumph bike.
I’ll ask my neighbor if he ever got around to giving those away. He might still have them in the vintage Craftsman rollaway that he keeps unlocked in his carport. The 3/16 W might still be there.

The Craftsman Circle-H sockets were made by New Britain in the late 1930's through mid 1940's. The yellow substance is BLO or some other kind of rust-proofing/preservative. Factory applied. These are not rare. Very nice, high quality sockets for the time. No disrespect whatsoever. Just letting you know they are fairly commonly found, mainly because they were so popular and they made so many of them. A whole set in a tray, a little less common. Usually they are found loose or in an attache style case with a ratchet, extensions, and other handles.

He might still have them in the vintage Craftsman rollaway that he keeps unlocked in his carport. The 3/16 W might still be there.
Is anyone else picturing Shiftless in a catburglar suit right now?

No, but I’m thinking of heading up the hill about midnight tonight when all the EC police are at the donut shop.:bounce:

I'm not a cat burglar. I'm just trying to fund a gun project and trying to keep the out of pocket expense as low as possible. If figured I would sell a few things that I don't use.

A.J.:
You can relax...They weren’t talking about you...they were talking about me possibly sneaking into a guy’s carport and lifting a few sockets. :)

Update:
Those Whitworth sockets are no longer with my neighbor...He gave them to his buddy with the old Triumph bikes. Sorry to get your hopes up. I’ll keep my eyes open for some Craftsman W.

Thank you! If A.J. wants to part with the 3/16W then that makes 5 out of 10. The other four are the ones Don posted a picture of... which are now my sockets... which means that picture is probably my picture... which doesn't have my permission... hah I'm joking of course! ...but those really are my sockets now [emoji4]

First actual post on here. Habitual GJ forum reader. Trying to find some info about this 9/32 drive and 1/2 drive C-man socket set. Alloy artifacts doesn't mention a whole lot. Here's a photo with more to come.1b4f0ea2a5eb2e1b2c0104134fbfd25d.jpg

Circle H and BE sockets seem to actually have the lowest sale price on eBay from my experience. The early C-Series are valuable, and the more modern =V=, V, VV, VA, and G series sell more than the H and BE, unless you have a complete set in original case.

I don’t know if these would help you but I was thinking of listing them on eBay. I think one size of socket is missing and of course the ratchet plug. They are BE and the exterior of the box has surface rust. The logo looks similar to the one on your box. All of them are 1/2” drive.

Thanks for the offer but I'm looking for the c series which were the first socket set craftsman put its name on . I definitely appreciate the offer though. I'm not sure about the box that I got with the set haven't done any research on that yet. Still trying to find out more about everything that came in the box.

May want to touch base with gear wolf, he seems to be the resident craftsman expert, but I dont think the c series was the first craftsman stamped tools. I think craftsman had some similar block lettered sockets with no maker mark. I believe that the C series tools were the ones that were made by snap on, and are some of the hardest to find, especially with the box u have. Either way, looks like a great set to try and complete.

Thanks for letting me know who to talk to. I appreciate that. I'm definitely no expert by any means. I was just basing my info off of alloy artifacts. Hopefully gearwolf can shed some light on the subject. Here is the section on AA I got the info from9ff615deb57ad589f9494044cc3274ed.jpg

Hi I have 3 craftsman sockets that I need identifying. The socket1A,B,C photos are of a 5/8 12 point -V- , 1/2" drive, with surface chrome missing, it is 1 1/2" long, too tall to match my STD size sockets, but too short to be a "deep" socket. where did this unusual size come from?. Photo 2B is a 1/2 drive =V= 5/16 W (i see in the start of this thread it is a Whitworth, as I suspected) when did Craftsman make Whitworth sizes, and what others are in the set?, The socket3A and B photos are of a 3/8 drive marked Craftsman, with no other markings, Top has a small notch, and appears to be manufactured that way. Inside the top is a 6 sided steel receptor insert. What is this one for ? When was it made?

That 5/8 socket is the correct length, and that last socket I think is for screwdriver bits. Whitworth I'll have to more research on.
Edit: I was close it's not a bit adapter like I thought it was but it did hold a screwdriver bit. Here's a pic from the 1981 catalog.
