TLH1989: I just noticed that 3baygarage posted a Hinsdale socket set with your pivoting patent ratchet in this Hinsdale thread a few months ago.

Thanks for pointing that out Lugz! The handle on that unmarked Hinsdale looks a bit different than mine in that mine has the handle fully knurled. That pics the handle appears to have a couple of smooth bands that aren't knurled in the handle or could that just be some error in a die or tool that created the tool that day?

Yup. I pointed the same thing out to 3bay when I linked this thread to the end of that one for him to see yours. I see that I linked his post and only his post instead of the entire thread, but if you go into that link to his post again, you can get to the thread from a link at the top right. Page down and you'll see my note to him about your ratchet.

And I just now saw you posted that comment in the Hinsdale thread this morning. I'm a second slow and a step behind you! Well, just maybe that thing might be worth something in trade to someone.

I "think" I remember Indestro having a ratchet described like this as well. Same era as their star-marked sockets (20-30's?). Will check AA later. Have the same ratchet, no markings on mine either. Handle is fully knurled like the one in this thread, not the Hinsdale.

Those hinge pawl ratchets are also known to be in SK socket setsfrom the 40's.

I have two and a 7" extension that came with one. The knurling pattern is different on both ratchets.

Has anyone ever determined which pattern belongs to what name, era or whatever yet?

CM always has been the retailer and not a mfg enterprise so would that help or hinder the hunt?

Just so we don't confuse things, TLH did not find the ratchet in a Craftsman set or associated with Craftsman sockets, per se. It was in an old toolbox with mixed brands and eras. He was just posting it tangentially in this thread because he was asking about the drive plugs he also found in the same box.

As for shaking out the differences in knurling on the handle (three bands of knurling vs all- knurled) and how that might relate to different OEM's (e.g., S-K), etc, I don't know.

But I will point out again as a reminder that the patent for the hinging, pivoting or rocking ratchet, as Todd called it upthread here, was assigned to Hinsdale. And the patent drawing shows flat bar stock handle.

(We'll probably never find this conversation again buried in this Craftsman thread!)

Going out on a tangent is how the best info is stumbled upon. One of my fave sites every thread goes sideways.

Thanks for the Hinny patent info. That is a help. Not strangely I first read this thread because I also have vintage CM sockets and rather like them. Typical CM mishmash of makers for them by design and marking details.
