I have a large single car garage (17' x 17' inside). It is a 100 years old and I have ben fixing it up. I finished the walls but left the ceiling open and wanted some lights that looked appropriate. Fluorescents were not considered.
I bought 6 of these 15" Foto pendant lamps from ikea:

The ikea bulbs are pitiful, so I put "60W equivalent" "daylight" 800 lumen LED bulbs in them.
This wasn't quite enough, so I just upgraded to "100W equivalent" "daylight" 1650 lumen LED bulbs:

These are pretty good. I'm satisfied. But for a bigger garage, I'd recommend more lamps. In my opinion, six 1650 lumen lamps is just enough for good working light in a 17'x 17' space.
