Vintage General Bench Grinder Question

I’m restoring wife’s grandfather’s bench grinder we found in the barn. A family member said this attachment was a guide rail for the grinder. I’ve looked and can’t find an old grinder with it. Can anyone confirm that this is used on this grinder, and how it would be attached.
