Another label I made recently

R.K. LeBlond lathe patent list label. OCR helped enter the numbers, then I overlayed the text onto the original to see the mistakes to correct. Found an exact match for the font and adjusted the spacing and tabs for perfect alignment

Delta Triple Duty Ball-Bearing Grinder Label for a model W2268B. I made a similar label in May using artwork available on vintagemachinery.org, but that turned out to be only an approximation. This time I had a scan of an original label and was able to make an exact reproduction.

Made some labels for GJ member Ghostnuke

Embossed labels for Craftsman 103.23900 6” jointer and 103.24511 drill press. Original labels weren’t in great shape so I made reproductions. The trick to keeping the embossing centered is to emboss first, then add label over the aluminum.

Here are the decals on the 3 wheeled Craftsman band saw I recently completed. There was a decal on the inside panel and then the power panel.

Made a set of labels for a Porter Cable 505 sander. This is a great sander that just needed some minor restoration, and a new set of labels made it look like new again.

Reproduction Delta Rockwell on aluminum. Hand punched and filed to shape. There is no “before” photo as the original was not available. I found similar models online and did my best to create an accurate layout.

The circle logo is supposed to have holes for drive screws but I left that for later so holes can be pinched to match existing machine.

Cutler Hammer Forward/Reverse switch label reproduction. Made for GJ member kshaub103 Printed on clear, scuff resistant lamination added the applied to a piece of aluminum. The first attempt making the screw holes damaged the label when the bit wandered (I hadn’t noticed that the tip was snapped).

Matt, I put this order of decals in a safe place and now that I'm ready to use them I cant find them. Can you redo these and also add 2 more GP motors and then I also have a different style power panel, see photos. Thank you. That will be a total of 6 decals

Matt - I admit I didn't read this entire thread but did see enough to say you do great work. I have a need for a Walker Turn motor badge like is shown here http://wiki.vintagemachinery.org/GetFile.aspx?File=WT_Motor_Tag1_a.png. Do you do direct printed metal tags or is it a decal that would be applied to a metal backing.
Thanks
Rick
Hi Rick. I have several printing technologies I use. Most of labels posted have been printed using a thermal transfer process directly onto adhesive backed vinyl. I then apply the vinyl onto aluminum sheet.

I can also UV print directly onto metal, but I found the primer I use isn’t as durable as the thermal transfer process. There are a couple new primers available, and I’ll soon be giving them a try to see how they work out.

It’s no problem creating a Walker Turner label, either print it on vinyl or direct printed on metal. But I would need a flatbed scan of the original label. I’m a bit of perfectionist, and I’d like to see the source scan so I can have exact placement of each element. The link you sent has already been cleaned up by someone, but because it’s a bit map, there’s some shifting in position.

Here’s another South Bend label. It’s a Lubrication Chart for a 10K lathe restoration. The original was nearly impossible to read. This was printed on clear, laminated and applied to aluminum.

On the subject of reproduction, we live in a time of near magical abilities sign shops. I had been looking for a 1940s IHC tachometer for 4 decades, I overpaid, but I have it. I asked a local sign shop if they could reproduce the tach face, The answer was a positive YES. The first copy is a much higher price. The nec dozen or so are less. I want to convert my other tachometers.
Aint tis fun?

I always make extra labels, just in case. So I’ll resend you the spare labels so you can use them. I’m sure you’ll eventually find the originals.

I’ve never seen this Power Pak label before. I was able to whip one up. (And by one I mean a whole bunch!)

It used to require a massive investment to open up a sign shop. $20,000 or more of equipment. Nowadays you can get that equipment for a fraction of that price, and that means a lot of less meticulous folks are offering signmaking services. That’s pushed prices down, and so buyers expect to pay low prices. That has inevitably lowered the quality.

There are still many places that don’t compromise on quality. I work with quite a few studios in New York City and northern New Jersey that work with very high quality brands where money is no object, and they strive for perfection.

It’s not the equipment per se that varies from an adequate job to a high-quality job, rather, it’s the time and experience put into the job. For me, this is a hobby, and I don’t mind putting hours into the design and production of a 2 inch label.

Reproduction labels for a South Bend 10K metal lathe. These were tedious to recreate in vector format, probably over 6 hours of layout work. Just the South Bend logo at the bottom took over an hour to get perfect. These are 99.9% perfect recreations. One area that is imperfect is the exact spacing of dashed lines in the gearing diagrams.
