Vintage Kellogg 2-Stage Compressor Info

I have a large old air compressor that has been handed down to me from my dad, my grandpaw handed it down to him. It was running probably a couple years ago and I stored it in my shed. Long story short it was locked up this summer when I got it out. The pistons had sized inside the head. I broke it down and got it freed up. But know that it is put back together it has lost most of its compression.

I am looking for some information on the unit. I have been doing alot of searching on the internet and ran upon a picture of a Kellogg 2 stage and it looks just like my unit. The only makings I have been able to find are what look like a serial number and maybe a model number stamped in the unit (they are below). There are no other markings. The original paint appears to be a light blue, but it has been re-painted at some point dark green.

It is a 2 stage oil lubricated piston unit constructed of cast iron. Looks similar to the model 321TV you have listed, but not quite. Below is a link to the picture i found on the internet that looks just like my unit.

Anybody got any tips on finding out exactly what the model number is? Or information on rebuilding one these. The pistons and head look real good, i think it proably needs rings and maybe valves. The valves were rusted some but i freed up using wd-40.

markings on the unit.

165477 stamped in one of the side plates
RE-10-100L stamped on the end of the unit.

link to photos of a unit that looks just like mine

Zrexxer i believe you are correct. after more research i have found that champion/gardner denver made a RE-10 2 stage compressor. but I have not been able to find much information about it. i have found info on a R10, but does not look exactly like mine. Any tips on finding more information on the RE-10 model?

IIRC the RE10 was the predecessor of the current R10 pumps. In any case, give Champion a call and see what they can tell you. Their parts support and documentation goes back quite a ways; there was a member here recently that had a Champion made in 1938 that they were able to help him with.

I have that same pump. I think it came from Grainger in the late 60s or 70s.

Anyone know where I could find a parts or service manual? Mine seems to have developed a lot of blowby.

And, what is the function of the small line from the head discharge down to the oil journal on the end of the crank?????

Not sure whether you're looking at the picture of the Champion or the exploded diagram of the Kellogg, but if you're looking at the photo, that's the head unloader line. It doesn't go to an oil journal, but rather to the centrifugal unloader housing, which is outside of the crankcase.

Or if you're looking at the line that comes down from the air inlet, that's just a breather.

I called Champion and they would not talk directly to me, but referred me to a local distributor in the Birmingham area. Called him and he called champion and said that RE-10 is not a champion model number. He said he believes RE-10 is a kellog model number. So now I am really confused. Also went to industrialaircompressors.biz and contacted them and they said that they have a manual for a champion RE-10, but it is 25.00. Guess I could pay 25.00 and see if the part breakdowns in this manual match up with my unit.

Any other advice on identifying this pump?

I imagine all he did was look at the current model listing and didn't find that number. How about some pictures of YOUR compressor instead of one like it from a website?

Yes, I will do that this weekend since it is dark when I get home in the evenings. Thanks for your replies.

If RE-10 is the model number what would the -100L stand for? It is stamped RE-10-100L, maybe that is another clue.

Just to follow up on this old thread. I did find out for sure it is a Champion RE-10. I was able to purchase a 4 page pdf file that has an exploided parts diagram with some part numbers. However have not been able to find a place that sales any parts.

I have the compressor broken back down and the HP piston rings need replacing, one had a crack in it and they were all sized to the piston. And it may end needing new valves.

Anyway, if anybody has any good contacts for parts let me know.

By the way RE-10-100L is the part number for the governor housing cover that is why it is stamped on the unit.

I found an RE10 and bought new valves.I think I also need new rings.Bought the valves at compresserpartsstore. You'll have to buy two kits to get the 4 valves you need,Z - 101 if I remember correctly.Ill check if that was it.This is really the only info that I've found.
