I need some ideas of vintage lighting for my shop. I have a wood ceiling and the appearance is barn-like inside.

I was thinking of using some of the steel pan shop lights, or maybe find some decorative antique globes. Even old gas station lights might do.

any ideas on where to find something cool for cheap?

I bought my old gas station lights off of ebay some years ago, knowing I'd want them for my shop some day. I have 1 flat one like this to go over the service door, and 3 larger/deeper ones to go over the entrance to each bay.

First real post here guys. Great site! My idea for the last couple of weeks for a situation like this...I would a demo salvage place or someone doing a demo and try to find old art deco louver style fluorescents, then retrofit them with t-8 or t-5 lamps and ballasts. Kind of the best of both worlds. They would maintain the style but give you the light you want to work with. Or, buy some $25 strip fixtures and fabricate a shroud for them. Just a couple of thoughts!

Wish I could find that type of light in an exterior model with a shepherd's hook. I hear they used to sell them at Lowes but where I live I've had no luck.

I could always go to a lighting store but that'd be more $$

Get someone with a conduit bender to make you up some "sheperd's hooks". Thats all they are anyway is bent conduit. Then use the fixture shown.:)

Are you looking for these? Look up near the door of the shop, I bought them at Lowes, they have a smaller version too.

Those old lights like that...at one time you could not give them away. Now they bring big dollars at flea markets, etc.

Check this place http://www.elights.com/reslig.html Looks like they have hundreds of different types of lights or at least it would give you an idea as to what they are actually called so you could ask Lowes. I think I have seen the above type at our Lowes, so I will look the next time I am over there.

AZ Glen....That driveway just sets your garage off. Looks real nice!!!

That's the one, I have the smaller versions for my people doors, but couldn't find the large one to go over my garage door stalls.

What size is the one you have pictured?
I may have someone look for them at their store and ship them out to me...if they'd be so nice to do so. Not sure how much shipping would be from AZ...

I'll double check my local store to see if they can track one down first though.

I would check back in with Lowes... I put them on my house when built, but when I went back to get more for my garage, they claimed they were discontinued. I hunted for a while for a suitable replacement with little luck. Then I passed thru Lowes to find them back on the shelf! I was stoked and left with 4 in tow! I would see if they can do a store transfer, but I wouldn't think shipping would be that bad because they don't weigh much. Good luck, I love the way they look.

Good to hear, I'll keep checking on them! I'd love to get a matching set for the front, what can I say aesthetics mean something to me. Besides the price is good.

Home Depot or other home centers sell these basic pendant lights that have sort of a vintage garage look to them, and they aren't very expensive. They come in different sizes and colors.

This is what my other three look like. The are pretty easy to find on ebay. Just search "Gas Station" and you'll probably find some. My local electrical supply house stocks these (Chinese made of course), and they are $60 each, which makes my ebay ones look like a bargain. I'll take the old originals myself.

I just saw on TV where someone used old Army helmets and intalled light sockets in them, and had them hanging from the cieling, they looked really cool.

Tractor Supply has a similar style to that. Item #3200528

They also have some pendant style lights from Westinghouse using Xenon bulbs. They seem pretty nice. We may get some for the horse stalls in the barn.

Google! There is an outfit that remanufactures the types of antique lights you are looking for. BTW you can make your own shepherd's hook out of EMT.

I just picked a light up for my kitchen from:

http://www.barnlightelectric.com/

Have a pretty good selection of stuff, service was pretty good, there was a mix-up of sorts and it was delayed in shipping, but after that was settled arrived very soon. Will definitely do business with in the future. (No affiliation, just passing along)

Also, they have Edison style light bulbs that add a very cool vintage touch, I'm worried about the life of them, but they have a definite cool factor
