Vintage MAC

I buy MAC tools when I can find them in the historical wrench section. I have a couple of duplicate sizes. These are both marked 11/16. They are both similar in style, but the part number on one is unusual. The top one is MAC C 8, the other is marked MAC C 8 8 8 perhaps someone customized it with an identical size and style digit, or it just got stamped a couple extra times.
Weird. I think it’s cool. I have found poorly struck wrenches, but never seen extra digits.



Just thought it was interesting.

I only have a few vintage Mac tools, lettering always looks good to me.

If all that your job consists of is stamping parts all day every day, the occasional mistake does happen. I have been in that position before. Stamping, electric engraver, and a CNC laser marker. I think the GJ largely gives laser etching a thumbs down, and I agree for certain things.

I have worn the laser etching off of my Estwing 20oz rip claw and my Klein 7" needle nose. My Wilde nailsets have flash rusted and laser etching no longer legible. However the laser is an easy way to minimize mistakes like on op's wrench.

It looks like the first two stamps were weak, and the 3rd took. Neat wrench.

The secondary offset eights are not of the same geometry as the single in-line eight. I've seen lots of older wrenches that were hand stamped as an owner's mark--certainly a lot classier than those awful engraving pens, and nowhere near as crude as the flied divots on the sides of handles. I vote for owner's marks.

Good call. I did work in a shop once where each tech had a number he would mark his tools with. The stamp would be a good way to do that.
