Kind of a unique design, cannot remember seeing another "direct drive" scroll saw like that other than the 18" Beaver model 2100.. Only downside might be the lack of mutiple speeds as you would get with a belt drive model.
When I was a member of the A.W.P.T.A. (Antique Woodworking Power Tool Association) I found a very unique 36" jig/scroll saw. The most interesting feature was the blade tension system that used springs, pulleys and leather straps to get the job done. Giant cast iron monster weighing in at about 1200 lbs.
