Vintage rockwell bench grinder

is there anyone on here that has a grinder like this thats a 8inch or a 10inch
the one in this pic is a 7inch 1/2hp looking for some help to see how many amp the 8inch is and the 10inch if anyone has one on here,
this one is a 1969

I have the Model 23-200 buffer from 1969. Not sure if that would provide a relevant answer. I may have a cut sheet for the grinder. I will look.

I pulled up a copy of the 1963 Delta Industrial Catalog. There is no mention of an 8 inch grinder, rather 6", 7", and 10". Unfortunately in no case do they address amperage. I believe in 1969 these motors were made by Marathon.

My 23-200 buffer is technically a 7" and is 6.1 or 3.2 amps at 110v and 220v respectively.

yep my 23-200 they were both 7in one was a 3450 and the 1725 i kept and were both built by marathon thats interesting no 8 inch, is that catolog on vintagemachinery.org

That is most likely where it came from but I remember having difficulty finding information about the buffer when I got it, so it honestly could have come from anywhere.

Kahuna: can i ask where you were able to find those catalog pages or did you have them saved on your computer?

Tedsters: i have a Rockwell chop saw i'll be digging out of storage in the next week or two so i'll check and see if it has an original motor on it and what it's specs are because it aint no little thing.

I looked at an early 70's Rockwell 10" grinder a couple of years ago. The badge on it was very messed up but it was a 115/230 machine. I was able to make out 8.5 amps. I suspect that's the amperage at 230 volts? So 17 amps at 115 volts?

My 12" 115/230 Baldor is 20/10 amps so that's why I'm guessing the Rockwell was 17/8.5. Seems unlikely it was 8.5/4.25.

I was quite surprised how hard it was to find info on these machines given how common info on other Delta tools seems to be. Glad to be able to pass it along.

I acquired my buffer several months ago and searched all around for info. These pages were extracted from a catalog I came across. I couldn't say specifically where it came from, though VintageMachinery.org is a good bet. If you need it, PM me your email and I will be happy to send it along.

7th Kahuna - Thanks for the information on these. Can you post a picture of your switch? Mine is broken off in the "on" position.

Edit - the upper portion of the faded motor label has a number 23-234 which is indeed a buffer model. The back of the unit is also listed 23-200.

I just acquired a Rockwell Model 23-234 buffer, 1725 rpm. Craigslist ad and $30 later, I am quite pleased. Smooth running and long coast down. Oddly, the back of the motor is also stamped 23-200 which initially led me to thinking this was a 7" grinder that had been converted to a buffer.

The motor nameplate on mine is partially worn off. It shows 5.6 amps/3.3 amps for 115/230 respectively.

I assume that there is supposed to be a spanner type wrench to engage in the shaft slot (see rear picture by grinding wheel) to tighten/loosen wheels?

I opened it up and the switch is a Carlin 3/4 HP switch. Appears to be switching both the hot and the neutral. I assume this is what is referred to as a DPST switch.

Congrats on stealing that Rockwell. Regardless of the model number, that looks to be the buffer version. I have the grinder version, and your shafts are longer than mine. And you have dust caps on the ends of the motor bells. The switch should have 2 sets of contacts, but only 4 terminals: DPST. (Double pole single throw)

Those slots are for the flange washers to engage to pins on the shaft. There is no spanner wrench that I'm aware of. I would simply make a gripping tool out of maple or aluminum to lock the shaft--ie, you could also sacrifice an old pair of Vise-Grips by drilling a large hole in the jaws to match the shaft diameter--. Or grind some wrench flats on the end of the shafts.
