Does anyone recognize or know anything about this S-K tool box? Estimated year of manufacture? Has no typical S-K badge riveted on it, or any holes where there ever was one, nor any remnants of a sticker. Just the logo stamped on the padlock hasp. Can't find another one like it. TIA

The finish on the box is modern/redone by someone. The places in the tray kinda don’t make sense for sockets, so maybe it was a holesaw kit . Don’t know.

I don’t think that it has been refinished. That looks like the “elephant hide” finish that is found on some prewar and wartime S-K boxes. My best guess on the date of manufacture with that particular handle would be no earlier than 1945, possibly right around that vintage. The top tray is similar to one of my early Kennedy boxes.

My guess is pre-war as well. I have the same, but slightly larger box. SK label on the inside. An older style latch on the outside marked EXCELSIOR Stamford Conn. Gray wrinkle finish.

Nice little carry box.

I think boxes like that can be used for tackle, but they are really a homeowners box. Keep your hammer and wrenches in the bottom, and the dished parts are for screws and nails, things like that.

'Zackly. Called the All-Purpose Utility Chest in S-K catalogs, described as "household use, junior mechanic, etc," and came in 14" (No. 114-C) and 19" (No. 119-C) sizes. I have the smaller one.

I have seen some odd sk boxes. Once came across an sk film box, like for movie reels. I wonder if they owned a toolbox maker.

Yup. So why would a socket set company sell movie reel boxes? Makes me think they owned a box operation.

Oh, definitely. I think I have an actual tackle box somewhere, too. I would guess that they were taking advantage of their relationship with Gambles, which sold more than just automotive mechanics stuff.

Someone here said the pre plomb p&c tools cart and chest were the same as the sk, so perhaps sk was selling/making boxes for other brands. They definately had no problem making tools for other brands.
