Been gathering ideas for my new shop to get built, and I'm going to make it look like a building from the 1940's. I'm thinking it'll be stick built (2x6), heated floor (MN Winters), CLF lighting like Veno, box truss for an upstairs man-cave, and will have a bump out on the front corner to resemble an old gas station (bigger windows with all the old ads) to act as an office. Anyway, on the walls, I'm currently thinking using a paneling that resembles concrete blocks if I can find something like that. I've seen smaller red brick paneling, but not sure that's period correct for a typical 1940's shop. So if anyone has pics of an old shop inside, or care to throw ideas my way, here's the place to do it, thanks.

Deep subject and can get deep in the pocket as well........

You said 1940's.....understand the economic climate during the "40's".It went from the backside,10 years of 1930's depression...into WWII....then after,it was the beginnings of "sub-divisons",GI's with pocket cash and a renewed/refreshed interest in building on the American dream.....

The whole picket fence thing that was "mosey'ing" along through the first half of the century got turbocharged with advancements in engineering born out during the war.Plywood gets its legs, stressed skin/veneer style of building comes into vogue.Marketing to prospective buyers rears its ugly head, and results in one size fits all mentality that destroyed a cpl centuries of vernacular architecture......

So,not to nitpick....but the 40's is way too broad of a time period iffin you intend to throw any real money at the project. It would be way easier shooting for the 30's.......because of the much simpler times. As for shop world, make mine a 1910 sheet metal shop...but thats me.Best of luck,BW

Understandable BWS. To narrow it down a bit, for the accessories in the office front, I hope to recreate something of a Texaco theme, as I already have a couple of their items. Or maybe even Shell, as I have a couple of there's too. Jury's still out. Will I find a cash register from 1949? Not likely, but I ain't too picky. That said, it can be '50's era as well.

In some respects, as I look at a lot of "vintage" pics of garages and gas stations, they are all of the outside, with a classic car parked nearby for added effect. I can copy that without much hassle, but when someone walks inside, I'd like it to still resemble what they see outside. Projects being done inside will be rebuilds of my '39 Pontiac, '47 Ford, '48 F1, '49 F6, couple late 40's IH pickups, etc..

I've seen Ryan post about old rippled sheet metal buildings, I've seen a couple of those, too. But I hope re-create the brick style I've seen in other pics. I guess my ultimate question is, does anyone have pics of a late 40's/ early 50's service station from the inside. Perhaps something that might give me an idea that I wouldn't otherwise think of, after all I wasn't born then.
