Gents,

Below is a CL ad from a seller who I've got some stuff from before. Stand-up guy. Do you think this box is worth the time and effort to restore? I've still got a few other boxes/projects I have in various stages of restoration. This would be my biggest to date. Looks like a KR-555. Thoughts?

I love older boxes (for home use only) but have been contemplating a newer box of similar size such as HF 44", Waterloo 41", or a used truck box.

Thanks,

Ky

Would have to see it in person ,if no major problems good deal. Between the two, if you have the room, I'd rather have the HF44". The KR55, is only 27" wide, friction slides and my biggest pet peeve, full of dividers (drawer stiffeners).

Good price, a lot of work. Not **** enough for me to go through the trouble.

But you can find worse ways to blow a 100.

I paid $75 last year for a similar sized (I think mine is slightly wider) Snap-On box that is in MUCH worse condition but I've got a weakness for SO stuff and I needed something to just throw the house tools into. I'd take that one in a heartbeat for that price. Around here people would be asking $250+ for that box.

Appreciate the feedback above fellas...all the info I need to be a "pass" for me (primarily the 27" width). I think the next box I buy to restore will be a top box Remline to match the other vintage bottom chest I have (the search continues). I'm now leaning further to a HF 44" or 56" for home use.
Thanks!

It's a KR558, not sure how I missed that digit in my previous post. You are correct the KR555 is a much heavier and larger box. It MIGHT be a 557 which is 33" wide, but really hard to tell aspect ratio from that picture angle.

I would buy it and use it for something specific like the base for a bench top tool, a tool cart, storing clamps or some specific used tools that are not frequently used or even use it like the drawers in a workbench.
For that money it's not going to go down in value

Buy it, clean it up but I wouldn't totally restore it.

You can never have enough tool storage at home and there's always a spot for one.

Thanks All! I wish I had more space to just put another box...working with a 2-car garage at home. I'm still going to pass on this one and hold out for another vintage Remline which is what I have a couple of to match. I know not a snappy, but I like things that match.

Will he take less than $100?

I'd give them 75 bucks for it, not much more than that. It takes lots of material and time to get these things to look nice.

There looks like there was a hasp/lock on the front at some point that was cut or ground off which would make me nervous in terms of sheet metal damage

Have you seen the vintage Waterloo box on there for $40.

Sure it looks rough but bottom is early to mid 60's. If wasn't gonna throw of my theme I was gonna take look at it.

I also saw the Snap On box listed. If slides in good shape it's worth it. Imo

Heck, I'll be in the Tampa area at Christmas time. That thing had better be sold by then or else it's taking a drive to Canada underneath a bus.
