No reserve but outragous start price. Not everything old is worth a huge price tag. I wouldn't give the guy more than $2-300 for it. I really hate people that try and sell things that are old for a small fortune. $2000 to restore it? That's crazy too.

Scam artist doesn't even begin to describe the hyperbole and outright lies in that listing.

He wants $3,500 opening, plus $2,000 to restore it, so minimum $5,500 plus shipping.

Thoughts:
1. Most would be surprised at how small those boxes are. We've supersized our toolbox expectations.
2. A re-spray isn't a restoration. The handles would have to be removed, but then the original rivets require a production tool to install, but then, they are NLA anyway. On a seventy-year-old daily user shop box. the interior spot-welded slides are usually really worn. They'd need to be replaced. If one were to pay an insane price, it would be for one of those few mint originals we've seen here which was stuck away in a basement and never used.
3. Over the years, I've passed on a couple of those in rough condition at around $550 because I don't collect antiques. All my boxes are users. Your results may vary.

That guy is an idiot plain and simple. He thinks just because something is old that makes it worth allot. That box is worth $200-$400 tops.

I got mine for $250. Yes, it needs to be restored, and it has definitely seen better days, but it's still restorable.

I'll do it right, and then use it in my shop to hold rarely used tools, or mics and calipers, or all my electrical tools... or beer waiting to go in the Coke machine. Who knows? But it IS cool to have.

3500 may be a bit steep, but to say that it's worth 200-400 shows total ignorance to the vintage snap on market. These boxes have sold for several thousand when the market was better than it currently is. It would probably go for about 800-1000 in the current condition and the state of the market. This is one of, if not the most desirable vintage snap on boxes.

Yes, possibly it is worth several thousand.

No, it probably isn't worth more than $200-400.

Maybe, we're all ******* in the wind. The guy who did the listing seems to be a broker or middleman who has promised the owner of the box an impossibly high sale, probably with his commission coming out of it, too. The result is a too-high opening bid which is causing the confusion. If he'd just throw it up there in a real no reserve auction and then everyone would soon know exactly what that classic box is worth in today's market.

A grey one went for 800 last month and it had some repairs to the front panel. Grey is hard to find, but red is more desirable to most. I have seen just the top box alone sell for over 1500 when the economy was better.

I went to look at that last grey box. The front panel had a poor rivet repair, replaced casters and missing chrome accents. All the drawers still ran beautifully and had keys. I would have keep it original, but it was a good candidate for a restore.

I hoped the shipping issues would keep it local (and reasonably priced) but a collector got it. Paid a small fortune in shipping on top of cost the seller said.

I have to agree with Chad. That is a mega cool box and I drop $800 in a heartbeat to have it, and maybe $1k. Wouldn't go over that though. I will find one someday I suppose. Actually saw one at an auction but didn't stay cause the rest of the tools were quite worn and the box wasn't in as nice of shape.

You need to understand that that Snap on name means a lot to collectors and to modern day tool users. Used SO sells better then any other brand in my store.
