Vintage Snap on restorations 1st post!

jn50308401 here are a few photos of the KRA2007 tool cab in progress. I do not take any initial photos but you can get in idea of the amount of rust and dings from the filler areas. Most of what you see were surface rust areas that were in the form of worm holes like you'd find in hardwoods. I removed the rust and used a skim coat of 2 part filler known as Half Time

Looks great man! I am kind of embarrassed now[emoji33] !!

I have way too many hours into mine and it looks nowhere near as good!

No need to be embarrassed at all. I failed to mention that I run a collision repair and restoration shop. I do this stuff everyday. I like your results. You fell victim to a paint that like you I know nothing about and wasn't sure of how it would react to other materials. That's one of the reasons I was so interested in your project since you were using Rustoleum. I've learned some does and don'ts from your posting and I'm still leaning towards using the Rustoleum as I really do not feel like investing $60.00 in mixing a pint of Acrylic Enamel from my system. See red pigments in automotive refinish systems are unbelievably expensive, so that's why I'm giving Rustoleum with the catalyst a try.

I tip my hat to you for your efforts just the same. These things test your patience! The Rustoleum is ok as an off the shelf product but I am curious about adding hardener. I'm a supremely inpatient painter so I hope try #2 will turn out better.

I'm worried about adding hardener to the paint. Im not sure about spraying on top of any of the old (Snap On)paint and Rustoleum paint/primer. I don't want to end back up with paint lift. The remaining paint seems dry, it's been almost a month since I had my problem.

Do a test spray panel. Take a piece of aluminum foil about 12" x 12", wet on wet your primer and the paint you used previously. Bake them in your oven at 180 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool for 30 minutes and bake at approximately 120 degrees and rest for 18 or so hours. Then apply the new paint with the catalyst. That should replicate close to what you will be dealing with. Keep in mind that lighter coats are better

Hammer- Thanks so much for the great advice. I'm trying to also get over the idea of the hardener killing me instantly if I'm in contact with it. I've read some nasty stuff online(for what its worth) about working with them. I wear long sleeves, gloves and a good 3M respirator with new filters when I am messing with paint/filler.

I'm not a pro painter so investing in more safety elaborate gear is kind of hard to wrap my head around, but I don't want to be a vegetable from the fumes either.
I guess you have to pay to play..

You should be safe. The catalyst from Majic does not contain isocyanates so you should be fine and you're taking the proper steps. It's the fools that do not wear respirators, gloves and work sloppy that are playing with fire. I never work without them nor do my guys. That being said, isocyanate poisoning is a serious issue.

I don't mess with the safety stuff. A mask is cheaper than a set of lungs. I'm going to the big Hershey Fall AACA show/swap meet with the Mrs. And I will be off Columbus Day so I'm hoping I can shoot some paint then.
I got my new drawer slides from Snap on and I'm dying to see it all back together!

Yeah, I ended up with a nasty sinus infection that turned into some bronchitis/chest thing. I've not been out in the garage for about 2 weeks.
I'm going to finish painting this week, we've got some nice weather.

I don't have any scientific mixing skills so I figure for a quart it would be more like an ounce or 2.. any ideas?

I do not have the can of that hardener in front of me, but I believe it is an 8oz. can, so figure this. If a gallon is 128 ozs. then it's a 16:1 ratio. That seems like a huge ratio, but that is how I mixed a sample spray-out and had good results. When I am working with such wide ratios and only needing a small amount, I use a 6" steel scale/ruler in a non tapered container to mix appropriately. You can do the same if you do not have access to a labeled measuring device. Do not to forget to add your Acetone as your reducer. I would recommend no more than 10%. After mixing, give the solution a 20-30 induction period before spraying

Here's a reflection of the size 14's in the after painting flip flops.. it's from about 4 feet away..

There maybe some controversy on the color. It's safety red from Rustoleum ' s pro line. I feel that it was a closer match to my 1982 vintage box. My 87 vintage was a deeper red so the gloss sunrise red seems a better match.

Good to see that you were able to get it painted. I worked till midnight last night sanding, masking and prepping. I had every intention of spraying this evening but life got in the way. My next target date is Sunday or Wednesday as I will splitting wood most of the day tomorrow.

Well first things first.. I had some old work pants to wear so they are currently stiffening in a pile[emoji16]

I did 2 coats 15 minutes apart. The paint I mixed cooked for 1/2 hour while I did a final wipe down and blow out my "paint booth" .

Yes the paint tacked up perfectly, and as of this post all but a couple of drawers are dry to the touch. The gloss and shine is great!

I jammed hard last night, wet sanded and buffed this morning, I have to install the top box drawers Snap on evidently sent them on a slow boat from Kenosha..

The side drawer compartment door is not installed yet, I have a piece if vinyl to cover it like the original which I could not not save.

She's not a beauty queen but I figure I can get another 34 years out of it as is.

Thanks! Paint was tough to sand. By tough its a very hard, shiny coat. It look perfectly servicable without any wet sanding /buffing. I could have went to 800 and been safe I think. I played it safe, since I was worried about burning through the edges. I started with 1000 grit then 2000, 2500. There's still a fair amount of orange peel but the dirt is gone.

I'm happy with the finish and very happy with the gloss and hardness. It's not 100% perfect but it beats what I started with

Looks like you've created a nice heirloom with your DNA written all over it. You say that it is better than what you started with, well there is no doubt about that. The paint on the older cabs and chest was so thin and the fact that they were direct spray Lacquer (no primer) made them prime targets for rust from the slightest scratch. You've given those pieces a new life and they should last indefinitely!

As I have stated before, I have had no experience with Rustoleum or paints of that nature, so I was very curios about what you found when it came to overall finish and buffability. I was very surprised at how tough the paint was when I did the spray-outs after I discovered the Majic hardener. It does sound like it sanded and buffed similar to Acrylic Enamel. I am still attempting to schedule an evening or weekend day to spray my cabinet. I need to get it taken care of as I do not want to re-sand. I'll post when I finally get to it.

I hear you on having to re sand .. I hate sanding. And buffing and painting and paint prep I'm having a feeling you'll do much better than me !!!

So here's a couple more pics with the hinged door re installed. The black part is vinyl from the fabric store (scrap piece was 3.00 bucks ) I had enough to cover the inside and outside of the door. I think it looks good. I had a big chunk of the vinyl and cover the Masonite "tile" on the top of the box. Vinyl I think sets it off.

Thanks again.. the masonite board looked awful and painting it wouldnt help so i figured the vinyl would go great with the overall look.

well.. never say never but I'm not looking too hard. If a deal comes along.. maybe, but the paint and bodywork is tough on my little garage and such a mess.

If the right deal came along I won't say no, but this was a big job. My compressor really can't keep up with the painting and DA work so it maybe time to upgrade that before I tackle anymore.

P.S. I put felt pads on the backs of the drawer faces so the slides don't slam into the sheet metal. It makes opening the drawers a tactile pleasure.
