Vintage SO and Cornwell ratchets

I picked these up last week for a whopping $5.50. The SO ratchet is frozen and has a broken selector lever. What can be done about this ratchet if I were to bring it to the tool truck guy for the warranty? Would he fix or replace it? Does any one know the vintage of this SO ratchet. I already checked alloy artifacts and wasn't able to come up with a clear answer.

The style of SO ratchet you've posted was popular with the military. I don't think the truck will warranty those. My understanding is that the military ratchets of this style had a "v" in the model #. Most of the ratchets of this variety I've seen have had the "v" in the model # and thus no warranty available (or so I've been told).

email snapon customer service asking for a rebuild kit, they will respond saying there not available and ask what address you would like your brand new SO ratchet sent to

My dealer had a kit that worked; you shouldn't have a problem finding one... should be same as 70 series ratchets.

The 71 part of the number is the constant that will lead you to parts for the uncataloged military ratchets, similar numbers within other size and time designations match up with the conventional civilian ratchet that is the same except for handle shape.

I have a 1/4" drive Cornwell ratchet, with an oil hole up top.
I REALLY like that little ratchet!!

On the selector switch, if possible, leave it, the kit does not have a brass one. But if you have to remove the paw, you should be able to remove the switch from the other side using a thin punch, you can reuse the switch if you are carefull.

OK. I ordered service kit PKRA71 and a few other parts.

Now, how do I remove the reverse lever? Is that a worn screw that I need to drill out? I've had this apart and there is no obvious way to remove it.

That is not a screw, it's a soft metal shaft that has been peened over. Simply drill the the head off the shaft and pry the reverse lever off. When you install the new pawl, place the reverse lever over the shaft and peen it on (called staking) like the original. Good luck and welcome to the SV-71 club.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure how many teeth are on the gear from the service kit... still waiting for it to arrive. My 71N has 20 teeth. If the kit comes with a 24 tooth gear I may need to switch-out the pawl with part number S71A4A - Pawl (for 24-tooth gear).

I'm guessing the service kit you ordered will include the correct pawl for the gear supplied in the kit. Also, just noticed your ratchet is a 71N and not a FV-71. But the advice I gave you on replacing the pawl and reverse lever applies to either model. If you are trying to keep it period correct, you may want to reuse your old brass reverse lever (see snapmoms post above).

+1 I agree on the 1964 date. This is the earliest date I have seen on a SV-71. These ratchets do not appear in the SO catalogs or SO online; likely because they are military contract production, as others have suggested.

I'm just guessing, but I think the SV-71 ratchet is the Government/Military version of the S-71 Commercial ratchet. I can date the S-71 from 1967 to 1989 (perhaps a few years earlier and/or later but I don't have the catalogs to document it). Anybody else have any theories on the likely date range of the SV-71?
