This is an early 1950's vintage Stanley #4 smoothing plane. I got it for $5.00 with a broken handle. I repaired the handle and cleaned up the metal parts. It looks very cool with the pitina left on it. I am an Architectural Millworker by trade and I restored this plane to put it back to work. After sharpening the iron, it cuts like a hot knife through butter. Nothing is cooler than old tools.

I'm just now really getting into sharpening and setting up a plane correctly. I have a few from 2 block planes (one is a low angle), smoothing, jack and jointing as well as a rabbeting one. Love to use the long joiner making ribbons. Nice job on yours. If they started out as a good plane they seem to be able to be brought back to good use.

I'd love to find a molding plane with many of the irons. I would use that a lot.

I'm not sure where in the world you are, but I am in Sydney Australia, and I have exactly the same plane. I inherited it from my father, who probably got it from his father. :

It's still in the box it came in. I'm going to a course with some "old tools" guys in late November to learn how to disassemble it, and then I'll clean it up for use....

I'll admit that I'm kind of a Stanley hand plane enthusiast myself.....
