I'm looking for suggestions for a vintage ceiling lamps for my new old garage. It has an open beam type ceiling that is about 8' high to the ceiling joists and then 12-14 inches above those joists in the middle to the peak ridge.

So what do I use in a low ceiling environment to spread light over a broad area? Those fluorescent tubes do a great job of that, but I just cannot stand that look. And there is not enough height to have something dangling.

Ideas? Vintage in style only please.

Here is a picture of the ceiling. The new joists will soon be stained to match the rest of the old ceiling:

I'll second barnlight, but bring money. You might have luck finding old fixtures on ebay, too. I have an old fixture that came out of an old shipyard in NYC that my BIL was throwing out. I put an LED bulb in it, and use it in front of my garage. It actually puts out a lot of light. The top of mine is very deep, designed for a huge incandescent bulb. I simply put in an adapter to extend the regular A-19 bulb to an appropriate level.
