Great post!! Brings back good memories of growing up in a UNION 76 station with the same equipment. My dad was an ace mechanic and when your car came in with a miss he did not start replacing parts. It was hooked up to the scope and the problem was found. Quite often a bad plug wire or a fouled plug. When we did a tune-up he required us to pull the distributor and set it up properly on the distributor machine. Yes, many of the old mechanics could adjust a set of points with a feeler gauge and a sledge hammer, but that is not how I was taught!! j

Wow! That brings back memories. I used those same kind of machines when I was working at a Buick, Oldsmobile dealership in Dexter Missouri in 1970. Sun equipment was top of the line. How time does fly.

Just joined the forum mainly because I need help. I recently got a box job Sun late forties distributor tester. The board with the main elect components was off and I need a picture of the assembled one to verify wiring. Not terribly complicated except one red wire that appears to be ground ? But not sure. See photo. Can anyone help? Thanks

Anyone have one of these? I got this last year but haven't tried to use it yet. It looks like it's supposed to be powered by a car battery you put in the lower back cabinet compartment.

I had one of those years ago but it ran on 6 volts only. Check yours before you possibly fry something with 12v. For the few times I used it I just powered it with my 6v battery charger.

Yeah, the manual says 6volt. I did hook up a 6v battery charger, and everything I tested seemed to be working. The battery charger voltage was too noisy without a battery connected though, so there was some vibration in the meters. I wasn't able to check the accuracy. I'm sure it will need some calibration.

I have a 1949 Buick in the garage that is 6volt, so I'm going to try just powering it directly from the car.

Love the old distributor machines. On older v-12 ferrari and such with two distributors that machine is a ‘must-have’ to synchronize the advance curves. Beautiful and fuctional..I’m jealous!

I actually have been doing a lot of Mopar distributors for people I am on threads with, more of a keep busy thing for me. My wife thinks I am nuts I just cant pass up a deal on these when I find them. Bringing a bunch for sale at Carlisle this year. Any one need some parts hit me up I might have them.
Did take a old scope cabinet and made a laptop desk out of it, the scope I bought for parts.

Hang onto the manuals and any other directions that show the scope patterns. I think it also often boiled down to "the operator" that could be the most important part.

How much current do you need from your 6 volt supply. With modern switching power supplies, the cost has gotten dirt cheap. I just saw a 6volt/2.5 amp wall wort' power supply for $13.95 on Amazon. Using a battery with a charger not only smooths the DC but also regulates it. I would be concerned that using a raw charger might be outputting a bit too much over 6 volts, along with the lack of filtering, but It could be the basis of a power supply with just a filter cap and a 3 pin voltage regulator but I am sure you are not looking for another project

1948 Sun Master Distributor Tester I've had hanging around for about 25 years. I spent several months last fall taking it apart and getting it going.

My 1120, in service since 1969 (in the 90s, we replaced the scope section with an SS-110 out of an 1160 machine).

I collect vintage signs and have two of these. They apparently came from the same piece of equipment that GeraldO has, and that GreyOwl says runs off a 6volt battery. The vehicles look to be from the 40's.

Great thread here in GJ. I've been a fan of SUN test equipment for years and have been looking for one piece for quite awhile. Just brought this one home last week thanks to a very local CL ad. I just love the design appearance, construction and function. While it may not get all functions used much in my garage it will have a special place to show off its style. The bottom cabinet has plenty of room for storage too.
Initially I plan to try and save the existing paint but, if I have to re-paint some panels does anyone know where I can get that blue/green color paint that is correct for the bottom roller cabinet?

I know this isn't the for sale forum but I figured this would be the best place. I bought the cabinet from an old Sun machine and the manual was in there. If anyone wants it let me know and it's yours. Just pay the shipping.

Mine was made around 1947 based on the dates stamped on the various test modules. Also it came with a stack of manuals and brochures in the cabinet that date to the late '40s.

I wonder when they made the switch from the relief cast 'marquee' with the bus and car to the flat painted one?

I had my grand-dads Sun dist machine till he died (I was the only one who knew how to use it), a family member retrieved it after, not a mechanical guy, he set it in a hot corner uncovered and let it (the rubber) rot! then junked it! Arrrgh!...they both, especially the 1120 tester look like units from the early 70s, my time, the timing lights usually failed being bounced around the "neon flash" tubes didn't like that, If you see any of the homeowner variety at a garage sale grab'em and swap out the tubes and/or the exciter modules... I have some hand held (4) Individual professional units in storage doing nothing, just couldn't toss em...

I just picked up a VAT 40 that is missing one of the outboard knobs. Each outboard knob is the same. Anyone have a spare from a parts VAT 40?

Did you go through the electronics on your own? Replacing capictors etc?
I'm a lot to start working on a few of these and could use a mentor.

Thanks,

These are going to seem awfully inconsequential in a thread chock full of big cabinet size testers, but I picked up these fiber fuse pullers at the flea market this morning. As I was saying in the Garage Sale thread, I probably pass two or three fiber fuse pullers every time I hit the flea, but they are always the same type, brown and basic. The red color on these and the finger grip holes caught my eye. Glad I stopped and looked. Sun Electric!
