Vintage tool storage or display

Ok so I’m curious. How does everyone display or store their vintage tools. I’m lucky enough to have a pretty big place but it’s still an issue. I’m familiar with Don Longs breathtaking set up. I see folks like Old Tool Guy and Snap Mom with these massive collections. Do all of you just stack them in a closet of so you display them.

Good question. Everyone is curious. Always. It's a natural part of the hobby to wonder where the heck everyone is keeping all their tools, and how. Here, from post #4 in the Sticky, are some answers! :)
PERSONAL TOOL CRIB TOURS (in alphabetical order)

The Craftsonian @ - @JoCoSawdust
Don’s Den of Dandy Delights @ - @d42jeep
The Horse Stable @ - @thehorse13
The Lugzsonian @ - @Private Lugnutz
The Big Party Garage - @don long
A Room of His Own; or The Hole @ - @bmwrd0
Rusted Trout - @Definistrated29
Twertsy's - @twertsy
I see folks like Old Tool Guy and Snap Mom with these massive collections.
@snapmom has graced us with partial views of her venerated Ode to Snap-on horde from time to time. @Oldtuleguy has been stingier, due in part, if I had to guess, to the enormity of its size and the diversity of its distribution. When you have just about everything from every brand ever made, it's kind of hard to keep it in one place! :)

Maybe we can get a nice series of 360* walkarounds on a dedicated thread out of them one of these days.
Do all of you just stack them in a closet or do you display them?
In my 'tour' linked above, the goal was to have almost everything out and visible. But even then I had some things under benches behind large tool outline mats that I was suing as dust curtains and some things in tall freestanding closet. So, probably 80% on display and 20% "in storage." Now, just a few years later, it's probably more like 50%/50%. So, yeah, space is always an issue.
I’m lucky enough to have a pretty big place..
I remember seeing wonderful panoramic photos of your collection, stupendously dominated by Craftsman, and the space it's in (the entire finished basement of a house, if I recall...), and there's no 'pretty' about either one - it's BIG! I don't remember what thread that was in. If you provide me the link or start a dedicated thread, I will include it in the list above.

Couple of pieces on display. Most of my WW tools are users, and behind doors or in drawers near the currently very cluttered bench, due to rust concerns from the ever present fog.. 😒

I made the decision years ago to collect and use mostly vintage tools. I've found that to really enjoy and use them they need to be accessible yet not interfere with other productive work. To keep from constant dusting everything most of my "dirty" work is done in a separate covered area just off the main shop.

I also put fixed casters on equipment that needs to move out for use like in the wood working area. Good dust collection helps there. The grand kids play in the shop, supervised, all the time and love it. Ed.

Here's one way to display things of interest. Found this shadow box display at a garage sale for $7. I knew it was a winner, sold it a week later for $35. After it was sold, potential buyers told me they would have paid $75 for it.

While I separate my users (in my garage, in a stack and a bench top box) from my collectibles (all in "the Lugzsonian" in the basement of the house), that wasn't really a conscious plan or decision, just a function of the buildings (much newer garage, 1893 house) and lifestyle (working garage, tinkering basement), and I really admire the way you've incorporated your vintage things into your working spaces, Ed. Even if they're seldom used, or not at all, it "feels" integrated, and also timeless, where new has grown from and around old. That area with the vises with the Keen Kutter box on top, for example. If I had a big temperature controlled multi-room facility as a shop, I think I would do the same.

Are the trees above the bay door decorations? Or old brushes that look like trees?

Also, love that the girl is winning that race! :)

Thanks Lugz, I do like working in and around and prefer good old USA equipment. That wood shop "addition" was my pandemic project. As the shop was built adjacent to a large drop off the entire thing is a deck built off of the main shop. The Trees were something my dad traded for about 45-50 years ago. A rocked driveway for a local artists trees. Hung over my mom's fireplace until a couple years ago when she passed. Over the other "goal" is my meager nautical collection.

I've recently had to screen the trees to protect from damage as a couple of the boys are now school age and can kick a ball pretty hard. They use this area for soccer, basketball, and ping pong mostly. I now added roll down shades to keep the balls in play. Only takes a couple minutes to prepare for grandkid visits....9 so far counting the one in the oven. Ed.

One winter day some years ago, whilst an astonishing amount of airborne moisture was condensing and running down the walls of my farm buildings the previous owner explained to me: "Every drop of moisture that floats in from the ocean in the air has a tiny grain of salt within it. When that lands on something and eventually dries out the salt stays behind and attracts yet more moisture, so everything around here that's left out in the open gets covered in salty water and goes rusty.."

And that is why my cars look like hell, every day except the day they get washed. And most tools I find around here are covered in rust

Looks great
Thank you.
The funny thing is, I never realised how much innocent amusement I would get from how other people react to a wall covered in tools.
Mrs Farmer J. thinks it's quite normal, as she worked in a hardware store as a kid.
Most people at least remark on them.
Some are completely captivated, and take pictures and 'selfies' to post on their social media.
Some can't understand that they aren't often used and are hung there just for interest, for decoration.
There are those who appreciate them purely as art, and others who want to know the the entire history of every tool.
One chap sat in front of them for hours doing a tedious quality control audit, and his eyes kept flicking over to look at them, but i didn't say anything as i just wanted the meeting to be over with, but he never did remark on the tools. Maybe he thought they were unhygienic!

Be prepared for the range of reactions from people who view your tool displays.. and please share them:D

Keep 'em coming, OTG! We'll cajole the whole collection out of you yet! :)

(EDIT: Love the Carter cabinet! I don't recall seeing it before. I found a much smaller two-drawer chest a couple years ago, posted here. The extra shelves and the advertising on top on yours are way cool. /EDIT)

I have been the king of repurposed display cases and such. It has served me well but obviously space is limited in the cases. And…..I’m a tool hoarder so of course I’m having issues

Man I really am lucky but the cases are proving not quite up for the weight. I really don’t want to spring for more shelving as we are currently remodeling half the house. My wife will kill me if I spend another dime on my tool barn. I am going to have to be creative

Man I am very lucky to have the room that I have already but of course want more displays. I like having it out as decorations if you will. I have so much overflow of stuff that I probably could start selling and solve a lot of my problems. The old cases are cool because it gives off a country store or hardware store type vibe but they really were not meant to hold weight. I think I might start slowly building cubbie hole for each tool brand to increase my wall space. Maybee more book cases set up in a flea market type booth area. Hare are some better pics of my lay out. Notice that the walls are packed.

When we move to the mountains for the summer we get my wife’s box of rusty treasures out and pick a few to hang on the wall. Every year the wall looks a little different. IMG_5252.jpeg

IMG_5254.jpegIMG_5255.jpeg
She used to pick up Her brand wrenches so a couple of those are included. IMG_5256.jpeg
A few are now on the wallIMG_5259.jpeg
A recent garage sale find is the rusty Ponderosa cup hanging on the Arizona dust pan.

I collect hand tools related to drilling holes, especially bit braces, breast drills, and hand drills. I like to display them, and I copied another tool collector's method of displaying bit braces--hand them on closet rod. Each one takes up less than 5 or 6 inches of linear rod, and they are high enough to be out of the way but still reachable. I use pegboard for breast drills because it was cheap and easy and fast. I can run the closet rod all around the room, and get a lot of tools out where I can see and find them.

Thanks Patrick. I think what I like most about GJ is getting a glimpse into how many ways different posters have of equipping and enjoying their working space. I love your recycled display approach as well as the others in this and many other threads. I think when collecting and setting up working space the most important thing is that each individual finds his or her space relaxing, enjoyable, and a place they can be productive. There are many spectacular shop spaces here on GJ. At some point, when my space is no longer as enjoyable, it will be time to thin down. Not yet.....Ed.

Green with envy, here! 🤢

Even though I live on almost an acre, 4/5ths of it is right out my back door and down a 45* wooded slope--great for paying property taxes and the view, but not much else.
My garage is home to two sports cars, a H-D Fatboy, two workbenches and tool storage.
Without a basement, my display area is my fireplace mantle. It accommodates only a few favorites--further limited to mostly woodworking tools due to the decorating proclivities of SWMBO.Display.jpg

A couple of years ago, I noticed the shelves starting to sag, so I supported the first two tiers with 2x4s from the floor. No catastrophes yet!
Tool Storage-0724.jpg

My actual "workbench" is that 17" piece of steel plate in the foreground...
