Vintage Vise Emblems/Sticker/Decals

I recreate old vise emblems and have difficulty finding examples to start with. I've started with Wilton vises, but would like to expand into other manufacturers. If anyone is willing, please reply with a picture of the vise stickers/decals/etc. on your vise(s) no matter how bunged up they might be. Anything is appreciated.

A picture as level as possible is requested and appreciated, even if the decal is actually tilted on your vise.

Printing: White waterslide transfer paper is best for slide decals. Adhesive photo paper is best for stickers (the ink doesn't soak into the paper). You can them on Amazon. Do not use uncoated paper.

Whatever the media you use, print and spray with three very thin coats of clear laquer to set the ink, and then cut.

AW: I like the older vises that usually didn't have an emblem or sticker so other than this Record quick release vise and my versa vises i can't say I have any others that can help you.

i'll see if I can take an post a better picture of my Record when I remember to take some pictures of the versa vise.

personally I like a naked vise with BLO (boiled linseed oil) on it, but I commend you trying to help others that like their stickers and labels and emblems.

That's pretty awesome work. Here are a couple of images of the Wilton sticker on my PowRscrew vise. I have 2 other of these without stickers that I want to restore so I'd love to get my hands on some.

I've already done that one, so here you go. Import the photo into MSWord, size accordingly, and print on your media of choice.

I've tried to color match based on photos I've collected on this one, so hopefully I'm close.

Yes, I will do other emblems. Depending on what it is (plaque, sticker, etc.) we'll have to discuss how you are going to print it. My town has a print shop that does all my metal plaques for me (heat press method) and it comes out incredibly well, but not every town has a place that can do it. I'm not retailing my work with any images I do, so I'm not printing for anyone. This is just fun to do and I need the help with getting images of whatever quality that I can use as a starting point.

Here you go. 4hrs well spent. I've got both the 72 1/2 and 73 1/2 version for you, depending on the model you actually have.

You should print these on white background water transfer label stock. I get mine on Amazon. Simply look for "Waterslide transfer paper white" and you'l see the items they have. You can try it on other paper media if you'd like, but the art is there for you to experiment with.

If I thought there was any demand for this decal and that you'd make them, I'd probably photograph it with a dollar bill along side it so you could get a fix on accurate coloring and sizing.

FartyMarty - Thanks. That's gonna take awhile to do. I'll put it in the queue (no, you didn't go to the back of the line) for reproduction.

I don't actually reproduce these at a specific size, since you can take an image in MSWord (or any other product, mostly), lock the aspect ratio, resize to actual dimensions, and print. Google 'lock aspect ratio ms word' to learn how.

Ok, FartyMarty... You threw down the gauntlet with this one and I decided the challenge was a good excuse to avoid cleaning up the shop in the basement. Plus, I learned quite a bit about how to 'mouse draw' and image in the photo processing software I use for truley complicated stuff (GIMP).

A few notes:

* With the exception of Mercurys' figure in the middle, this was pretty straightforward.
* The figure of Mercury was a pain in the &$*. But it was a challenge I decided to have fun with.
* This is the best I can do. If it doesn't pass muster, it's all I got to give.
* I grabbed a bunch of other photos off the web, some were brighter than yours and showed the original colors a bit better. I hope I got it right, but I can also adjust colors on this if you want me to.

After looking at other Paramo decals, the bottom lettering most likely says "Sheffield, England" and I might be able to do a decent derivation of the "Paramo" in the middle, I have no idea what the text might be in the top arch of the decal. If anybody has guidance on what it might say, I can probably come up with a somewhat decent replica.

I did some research on the F.Parramore & Sons company who produced the Paramo vises and other woodworking tools. Based on the imagery I see used in their other product lines, I was able to 'divine' what I believe the original text of your Paramo vise decal probably was.

I would print this on white waterslide paper (available on Amazon); however, if you choose another media to print on, go to the original post in this thread to see some tips on what paper stocks you should use.

I wish I could find a minty metal Craftsman tag for my vise. I killed it trying to remove overspray from a previous owners ham fisted spray paint job. As it is, I found an image on the net, printed it off at 27% size and dropped it into the recess in the vise, then I soaked it with cyanoacrylate glue to sort of plasticize it. It sort of worked

MMM: which Craftsman emblem are your talking about? Heritage, long C, Crowntop or ???

sometimes you can buy or find another craftsman product to get a badge off of if it's on metal.

AWDAVIS: not that i'll probably ever need or use any of your labels cause I like naked or metal badges, but your work is AWESOME so thought I'd thank you for sharing your skills.

MacMcMacmac: If your emblem is embossed/raised then I can be of help. However, if it is simply flat metal and you can find a local print shop that can do 'heat press' printing, then you're in luck. I have my metal Wilton Mechanics Vise tage for the side of 1750s and 1755s done locally and they look incredible. You can heat press any number of colors, so take a pic of your emblem and let's see what's possible. A lot of people have replicated the art for Craftsman badges, so art should not be hard to find/replicate.

Thanks so much for elevating my work well beyond what I think of it. I have to admit, though, I do all of this in Microsoft Powerpoint with a little bit of work in a photo software tool called GIMP. However, my **** retentive side (or skill if we want to call it that) does lend itself to 100 do-overs on this art that eventually produces something we like. Again, thanks for the compliment.

I started buying/selling Starrett machinist tools about 10 years ago. Buying on Craigslist around the country and selling on FeeBay. So, I've been restoring machinist tools and the boxes they came in, and reproducing the exterior and interior labeling/signage, for years now. I've decided to expand my buying/selling into industrial vises as yet another excuse to go to coal plant and machine shop auctions (love the smell of machine oil) and have yet another hobby income to pay for gold-plated air hoses in my shop (lol). I love the craftsmanship of these tools and the restoration process is quite soothing.

This might look simple, but the script-style "Record" is a very strange font, so I've done the best I think I can do on this. Hopefully it will print acceptably for you.

AW: while I really appreciate you spending the time you took to re create the Record label like I mentioned I'm not a fan of stickers so i'll probably strip the Record and put on BLO or leave it as is and clean and re grease and put it to work.

that said if you ever need any help with some old tool identification i've learned a thing or two about vises and old tools so feel free to email me if you have questions that you don't want to start a thread or post about.

I started a thread about the Jakemac Columbian 804 file that he created (and no longer has). I'm still looking for this .psd file.

Anyway after looking online and seeing photos everywhere of 1 restored 804, it has one decal on the dynamic jaw and 1 decal on the side with the swivel nut. They look to be the same size which looking at my 804, would be about 2 inches wide. In Jakemac's original thread he has a photo of the side of an old 804 (non swivel nut side) and the label is larger than 2 inches. Probably around 3 inches. Anyway, if I can find the file should the labels be 2 different sizes? And which side of the fixed jaw should have the label. I'm thinking more for longevity rather than what they were originally.

Thoughts? Because of size limitation on this board, the image is slightly smaller than 2". However, simply paste it into MS Word, resize to whatever you want, and print. I use Blingasm white background water transfer stock for printing. I then apply 3 light coats of water based clearcoat. When ready to soak/transfer, cut the emblem out with at least a 1" border around it so the water doesn't get to the printer ink at the edges. Soak in warm water for 75 seconds, and transfer the emblem to a small plate of glass. Don't pull it off the backing paper, push it off using two fingers or you will incur stretch marks in the ink. On the glass, cut the excess border off with an Exacto knife and transfer to the vise. You might want to print multi images on the water transfer sheet so you can mess a few up before you get the hang of it.
