Vintage Wards/Lakeside Bench Grinder Refresh w/ questions

Hi guys,

Long time lurker here. Picked up this old Wards Lakeside bench grinder today (Model #DA5510 8112). It belonged to an old machinist, and I'm happy to have snagged it.

Can anyone tell me a rough manufacturing date (or where I could find that info?) I will be going through it shortly.

Welcome. Pretty cool, love the 1 piece shield. I suspect the serial # is a date code, Feb. 1948?

Edit, just noticed, is that a wire wheel and a grinding stone mounted together on 1 side?

weird seems the model and serial numbers reversed?
"55 deg rise in 1/2 hour" , I reckon this is NOT an industrial duty motor.

my guess 1955 possibly to early sixties.

Yes, there is a doubled up wire wheel and stone. The nut is barely one a thread or two. Needless to say that's being corrected. Trying to get some new tempered glass for the shield as well.


There will be some shots posted as this thing comes apart. Maybe help the next guy.

The Lakewood of Lakewood Ward, I presume is the fan company. They are still very much in business. You can never tell how good their records are. Give them a call. It is not unreasonable that they made the grinder for Montgomery Ward. They sure make enough small motors.

To make up for my previous mistake, I found the above link. It is all that appears to be known about Lakeside. It was apparantly only a MW house brand. That leaves the actual manufacturer still a mystery. There is a restored Lakeside grinder on the Vintage Machinery site but no additional info. There is a restored Lakeside hand grinder on ebay. A lot more than than grinders was made under that label.
