Switching from ell handles to 3/4" extensions for a minute... a fellow GJ member very generously donated this "44+" dated N-312 8" extension (41-B-309-20) to help me complete the elements contained in a WWII 41-W-2620 set. It's much appreciated.

Hit a little Wrighteousness at the flea market today, Billiam. Both wartime by my reckoning!

An S-159 1/2-inch drive socket with a 13/16" service opening and a "-45" (1945) marking, and a 1/2-inch drive male-female GMTK-spec U-11 universal joint! Note that the uni joint has no date code, BUT..... it has an extra "U.S." stamp, not part of the BARBERTON, O. U.S.A. marking. That has to be an after-factory martial mark.

I only found one on Friday. It’s a 1/2” 3/8” drive socket dated ‘42. It will be headed to Bill’s home for orphan sockets.

The breaker bars, extensions, and universals seem to be the ones that have the martial "U.S." stamp. I have yet to see a socket that is stamped that way.

Yes, the ratchet is a 2400. The sockets are all 6-pt or 8-pt.

That is a nice set. Wright called those uneven 8 point sockets "Ten Point" because they would fit hex or square fasteners (6+4=10), but it is confusing since they are 8 point. I believe they've stopped producing them.

Interesting. I've never heard them referred to as 10-pt.

From page 4 of the 1957 catalog

Found this Wright MU-56 (11/16") 3/8-inch drive swivel socket at the flea market today, as first reported in the 2018 Garage Sale thread. It has a natural steel finish, the US Army Air Corps marking, and a 1943 date stamp. Shown with a Plomb WF-77 (11/16") 3/8-inch drive swivel socket found in the same box. The Plomb was cad plated.

Thought I'd share some shots of the wartime Wright 3/8" drive pieces that have come together with the help of so many. Most of the pieces have the "AC" Air Corps stamp on them.

Just found these locally-first time for this Wright version-Will have to sort thru the 57 catalog to see which sets these might fit-some are marked with -45 +45 and 44 and some with A C also. Not a complete set of either 3/8 or 1/2, but would really like to complete a set of each. Nice vintage stuff.

Nice ones DT. They're still out there - somewhere! :)

I picked up this 1942 dated Wright H1 pin punch that looks like it could fit the WWII Class 41 41-P-3600 spec - 1/16", octagonal, 4" OAL.

Misterbill, the BP16 combo wrench in 1/2" i just got looks like it has a date code of 8+. What would that represent?

Here are all 6...pretty sure the bottom Cornwell is a modified 5/8 combo, not a dbe, with added 3/4 angle wrench head, but they all look similar. 2nd from bottom only tappet of the group, and it has a funky misstamp on the 3/8" end, a 16 is clearly visible. So crude, I love it.

And this isn't that old...id guess 70s...still vintage, and it seems that Wright had the ability to make long-pattern combos back then, simply too bad they can't do that in this day and age on Wrightgrips...:shocking:

Dave,

My opinion - and in the absence of evidence it is only an opinion - is that there is definitely some tie-in between Cornwell, MAC, and Wright wrenches from that period. Similar manufacture, numbering scheme, hex gullets, etc. to just be coincidence. It would not be far-fetched to draw the conclusion that Cornwell made wrenches for MAC and Wright under contract. Maybe some of our Ohio members have anecdotal evidence they can offer in support.

Bill

Traveling across country years ago I stopped at a huge antique mall near Springfield Ohio I think called Heart of Ohio antique Mall to stretch my legs. Anyway, in a far corner there was a booth with what must have been a thousand wrenches. including early Cornwell, Wright Tool & Forge , the later MAC, and even later Vanadium Tool Corp, and then every other company you've ever heard of. It seemed pretty clear that the "tie-in" is OHIO one way or the other, either actual contracts or just the natural tendency for tool companies to bite off each others ideas and even employees. Whether in Milwaukee: Blackhawk, Snap On, Milwaukee Tool & Forge, Husky or on the West Coast: Thorsen from P&C. But like you say, without evidence....

Three (3) of the mess of swivel sockets I found at a flea market on Friday were Wright, all 3/8-inch drive, all WWII.

- An MU-55 5/8" service opening with an extra (additional to the "U.S.A." in the "BARBERTON, O. U.S.A." marking) martial "U.S." mark.

- And two (2) MU-57's 3/8" service openings with an "AC" (Air Corps) marking.

No date codes on any of them.

Dave,
Do you have examples?

"All,
Does anyone have any examples of Wright Tool and Forge manufactured DOE wrenches other than the same wrench that both AA and now Todd have in their collections?"

"I'm not saying they don't exist, but it's odd that they are so uncommon."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Lugs, this has probably already been replied to but I have a few of those DOE's and have seen dozens, in my experience the early, but not quite as early combo's (like the BP 16 posted on this site) are MUCH scarcer.

Yeah, it’s different. Had to go for it when I saw it. I’ve long ignored and put off collecting the cool old Wright pear heads. I think because in the wild I never even see the most super common, the MN 60 and N 60, and have refused to buy them online. People seem to find them regularly. :dunno: Must be due to the abundance of old Williams where I’m from.

This is a set I got from my dad. I’d forgotten about them until recently and turned them up while sorting some boxes in the garage. Am I reading correctly that those are 1947 dated?
