Not a garage question but Mrs Ratdoggy is very tired of our kitchen (which is essentially her garage) tile. She's thinking of laminate or vinyl planks. Can it be put over the existing tile?
Or does the tile have to come up?
I'm thinking that the grout lines would have to be filled at the very least and the transitions would be a pain also
Big job right there.

Without smooth underlayment anything you put on top of that tile will telegraph through to the vinyl surface. Not sure about the new wood floor but it if it thin wood then same problem.

I didn't find it difficult to remove ceramic floor tile. With a heavy chisel or wedge tool or machine the tile comes off quickly. It is messy but not like cutting grinding dust messy. I would then level any high spots, lay underlayment and proceed with vinyl or wood on top.

It all depends on how wide the grout lines are. You can put like six or eight planks together and walk on them in socks while they are laying over the tile. You may not feel anything at all. At worst you just need some leveling compound in the grout lines. I have laid vinyl plank in a few rooms and am looking at putting them over the tile in my kitchen. My tile is angled while the planks would be straight so I could not feel anything when I tested. When I did the dining room with hardwood next to the kitchen I found at the transition that my tile base was a little over an inch thick. There is no way that I would bust all that out when doing vinyl plank over it.

I am assuming you are talking about the click together kind of planks which will require a padded underlayment. I highly doubt the grout lines will show through. Vinyl tends to be be more flexible and would be more likely to telegraph through than the more stiff laminates. You should be fine going over the top but yes you will have to deal with the transitions.
