I'll be moving into a rental soon. The room I'll use as my office space is carpeted and I'd much prefer to have hardwood (or vinyl plank, etc.). I searched around a bit online and there are quite a few posts where people describe how to install vinyl plank over carpet. The rough procedure is to first use a layer of underlayment plywood if the carpet is not very thin and hard and then place the vinyl plank on top, making sure to stagger the planks. The carpet in this room isn't thick and soft, but I'd probably still use the plywood to have a nice firm surface for the vinyl plank. Also, like for any hardwood installation, it's important to leave a small gap between the planks and wall to account for wood expansion with temp and humidity.
Is there anything that can go wrong with this? For instance, can it damage the carpet or anything else? The carpet isn't nice or fancy, and in fact it's a bit dirty and has some stains. I've been under the impression that I can remove this and the carpet will look as it did before the installation. Is that correct?
I have some server racks that are pretty heavy that will be placed on this: probably in the neighborhood of 400lbs or so.
I wasn't originally planning to disclose this to the landlords, but now I sort of feel obligated to. I am a bit worried it will sound worse than it is, though.
