vinyl siding as a ceiling material

I am changing the siding on my house to match our new 32x40 shop
I've got a ton of white vinyl siding off the house that is useless to me
I've got 12 foot walls in the shop with scissor trusses and I'm thinking about strapping the ceiling every 2 feet with 1x4's and trying the siding up there.
because of the height I'm not too worried about grinder sparks.
just wondering about the droop factor and if anyone else has ever tried it

better strap it every 6" or it is going to sag... Vinyl siding is very heavy...

With vinyl siding it will take alot of support to keep from drooping. Just take a look at the difference between siding and soffit in structure. The siding is not designed to hang on a ceiling so it would need extra extra support to do this.

I would suggest putting up a couple test rows, group 2-3 pieces of siding on the ceiling with 2-3 different support spaces.

Scrap/recycle the vinyl siding @ 6 cents a pound and pick out a material that won't sag and burn as well as vinyl. If it's the siding look you are after - wood or metal are options with greater rigidity.

My local recycler wont take the vinyl and Junkman the stuff I pulled off was not heavy at all . It was however flimsy.

I have vinyl siding for the roof of my front porch and it looks like ****. I cant wait to rip it off and it's only 2 yrs old. It sags and bulges and the side trim is even worse. Use something else

I'm wondering about the confusion that siding on the ceiling might cause after toooo many drinks! You might think you are standing when you are laying down or vice versa, a guy could hurt himself..........sorry

the hardest part would be finding the door on the ceiling or the light switches

You may as well spray gasoline on the ceiling and light some candles...

Drywall gives you a short period of fire resistance, vinyl siding on the ceiling will accelerate a small fire into a total loss.

Not to mention the deadly fumes burning plastic creates!

I'd say that if the ceiling is burning and letting off fumes that would be the least of your problems
I'm going to tin it anyways but I think you'd be hardpressed to light off vinyl from sparks
seems like it melts alongways before lighting off

Not necessarily...building codes have special sections designated to the use of exposed plastics because of this AND the issue of melting (especially overhead)

Yes and unless there is a life to save inside firefighters are likely to fight a fire from outside only. Even with a Scott Air Pack, dripping molten plastic (weither on fire or not) is a good reason not to enter in my opinion. Going with the tin should be a better choice all around.
