I just vinyl sided my two car garage. I used roofing nails and my Dewalt palm nailer. The nail head are big but they do fit in the opening. Made siding it a pleasure.

I kept an eye on the nails making sure not to nail them all the way in, and when it did happen pulled them out a bit. Test for sliding after nailing every piece.

I tried using a hammer, was not very skilled at it. I ended up hitting my fingers too many times.

I also tried the vinyl siding attachment for the Bostitch roofing gun, it was worthless.

The palm nailer saved the day.

I installed siding on my house and attempted to use my RN46 Coil Roofing Nailer with VSA4 adapter:

I did not like the way it worked. Depth had to be set by pressure, but it varied based on where the compresser was on its fill cycle. Had to set it low and tap down the high set nails. The adapter was a single pin that centered the nail in the slot horizontally. I found it easy to get the nailer tilted which caused the nail to be misaligned vertically, blowing out the slot.

In the end I found it quicker, simpler and more accurate to just hand nail.

There probably aren't too many aspects of building that take less time than the actual installation of vinyl siding. Yeah, the prep work is important and takes time, but a nailer will be no help in that regard.

Use a hammer.

Bought on of these years ago for my Bostich roof gun.

I only used it to replace some aluminum siding stolen from a rental property. I don't think I ever used it for it's intended purpose of vinyl. It has an indexing tab to fit in the nail slot. I think the number is a VSA2. For a RN45 nailer.

Whomever installed the siding on my house used large staples. They were plenty loose so no issue there. I had to replace a few pieces after the neighbors stuff went airborne. I used exterior decking screws that I had and just didn't sink them in tight.
