Vinyl siding J channel question

I have a Vinyl siding J channel install question maybe someone can help me with? The metal roof on my Barn style shed only overhangs about a inch, I am putting Vinyl siding on it and at the top where the J channel will go, there are gaps as you can see in the picture. I am worried that rain will blow in and get behind the siding. I know siding isnt fully waterproof but thought I should do something to close the gaps? It is wrapped with Tyvek house wrap so is there anything I should do to fix it or not worry about it?
Thanks.

I wouldn't leave it like that.

I see two options.

Get some more tin and cut short sections that would slide up underneath the existing. You would make them long enough to reach the screws and overhang an extra couple inches.

Or use some coil flashing to make a drip edge. The top edge would also have to be long enough to reach the screws. The bottom would just overhang the j-channel.

Thanks, kind of what I was thinking too with the drip edge. I also could loosen the screws on each roof panel and lower them a bit, lots of work but probably the best way to do it. How far do you think the roof panel should overhang?

Either way with the roof overhanging or with a drip edge, there will still be the openings where the ribs are in the roof panel.

This should be changed to "metal roof is too short questions".

You need another few inches of roof. And then there should be foam closure strips used for closing up the voids under the ribs.

Can you run a flat board, perhaps a 6" piece of PVC, as a fascia and bring the siding up to that? You might even be able to get a piece of metal drip edge in too.

I realized I cannot remove the roof panels to lower them without basically removing all of the roof so that is out. There are foam closure strips installed under the roof panels.

Wouldnt running a fascia up to the roof edge have the same problem as having the J channel up to it?

I think a custom drip edge will be the only way to fix it?

I don't have a suggestion other than maybe custom flashing. J channel also is not the proper termination at the top there is a finish strip that the siding locks into that should be used. It is much thinner and may help you find a solution to flash that properly.

My first time doing vinyl siding and I was copying how it was done on the house, and from I see the J channel goes up then the finish strip goes inside it to hold the top layer, I also have the punch to punch the tabs out. I have seen youtube videos of it done that way as well, is it not correct?

^probably, but the PVC fascia gives you a rot free, wide flat surface to build your drip edge around.

Not sure how to make this look right at this point. GL

Sliding in a new piece of coil stock to cover the J-channel as a drip edge of sorts may require you to replace the foam strips as well.

On my house I only used the finish strip, No J channel. I did this on the eaves. the gables have j channel. It may be personnel preference. I do have the punch tool too. It makes a real nice connection to hold the last piece of siding.

Some vinyl installers use "undersill" trim at the top. As Diesel said, a punch tool forms little ribs in the top of the last siding piece (with the nailing section cut off) that locks into the undersill. You can put the undersill trim inside of the J channel, but you need a drip edge as the overhang should have been longer.

That top channel you punch tabs for is a lot skinnier. I think is the ideal least work solution. Other solutions would be pretty crummy.

Put the "inside closure strips" (Best-by-Metals name) in to fill the ridge gaps/holes then put a preformed drip edge under the roof sheets and over the closure strips to run the water off. I just purchased some sheet roofing and along with closure strips. The strips are made of plastic warrantied for 40 years. Roof should have had more overhang.

You could use flashing to match the siding or roof. End your siding up in it and cut the top clip off the siding. Exterior trim nail up under the flashing that extends up under the roof.

There is a type of gutter installation that has a flange attached to slide under the metal. Solves the water intrusion and provides guttering. If you are planning to have some custom metal bent anyway, maybe they could do that
