Vinyl siding question

I've added on to my shop and I'm getting rady to do the siding and was wandering if anyone has ran the siding on their gable parllel with the rake. My new addition is 2' taller than my old shop. It would sure be easier than cutting several pieces and going horizontal. Thanks for any input.

IS it going to be visable? will you notice it is different on the gable then the rest of the shop? Lastly, it is not that big of a space and i would do it to match.

gotta go horizontal; it will look like hell and look like a amateur did the work if you don't go horizontal. The curious sort in me wonders if the siding manufacturer will even warrant or ok their product installed any other way then horizontal? If you run the siding along the gable you might get some wind driven rain penetrating, just a thought.

I would skip the vinyl for such a small area and go with a different product,just to make things more interesting visually,and perhaps a bit less effort as well.However if you stick with the vinyl-you MUST go horizontal with it or it will look hideous.

My vote as well.......do it right or do something different....

What ever you do....make sure it's something super low maint.....

I would look at something like hardi board...or, if you were in the right part of the country....stucco....

Please go horizontal. It won't be that much more work once you figure the angle.

I've seen many jobs where people have run vinyl siding on buildings at the same angle
as the roof to create an break in the horizontal. It has always looked tacky and cheap
to me, just my .02. The double ended cut really freaks out a lot people not comfortable
using a speed or framing square. Take some thin cardboard and create a template to
use as you start up the gable. You can eliminate the possible waste of a mis-cut piece
of vinyl and you can check each step of the way up the gable and make adjustments
as needed.

Yeah keep it horizontal. The best part about hanging vinyl is if you mess up piece, you can just cut a new one. And being such a small area there, once you get the angles figured out it will go really quick. You'll spend more time going up and down the ladder.

OK, I'm going to do it right and run it horizontal but because the new shop is wider the two roof peaks are offset therefore one side is wider than the other. How do I get the 2 sides to line up in the middle?

To get them lined up you will just need to chalk a line or measure from some pointof refrence on both ends and start your siding @ the same elevation on the wall. It would be like doing around a window or door. same principles apply.

good luck and im glad your doing it horizontal. vinyl is real easy to wrok with and worth the time to do it correctly.

I'd cut pieces from 4x8 Hardiboard and put up there. It's an odd layout with the peaks off a bit and if it doesn't match the regular siding at all, nobody will nit-pick it LOL. Otherwise, horizontal.

My first car was a 67 Falcon Futura with a 200 six and three on the tree. Later I put a 289 with a 4 speed toploader in it. Seeing your car brings back memories.
