Hi, I was curious if anyone had experience or ideas with fixing vinyl siding. I have a detached garage and the strip of siding closest to the ground is getting quite a bit of rot. In some spots I've used a product similar to bondo to bandage it but it isn't idea. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Adam

Looks like masonite siding. Once it starts rotting, there is no patching it. You could cut it back to a good spot and use cedar 1x4 or 6. Nite I didn’t say green treat. Green treats warps something terrible. I did that on a shed at a previous house and it turned a shade of gray after a while. Took care of the rot though. Best of luck!

Thanks! I didn't know that was the name of the siding. That helps a lot, all my previous google searches had been fruitless.

When you did that with the cedar did you then paint it? I'm trying to image what that looked like. I'm imagining the piece of cedar didn't blend in with the rest of the siding? Something like this?

Vinyl siding, IMHO, will not rot.

Hardie -- is not ground contact rated. needs ground seperation.

I like the Boral freeze board ... give it a look. It comes pre-primed. Prime it agin with a good primer and top coat

While you are looking into the siding repair I would also look at the door frame. They have a tendency of rotting about the same bottom 6-10 inches as your siding. The vertical piece to the left of the hinge is the main thing to look at. The next vertical piece I 'think' is brick molding. That's easy as it's not structural and it is usually attached w/ finish nails so will just pull off the wall. I am thinking while you have those lower 2 pieces of siding off is the time to repair the door frame if needed. I would hate to get the siding fixed and 2 years later the door frame is a problem.

I did not paint the cedar. I do like the ideas of other folks to repair. I did tear it all off my house and resided with vinyl siding.

You have some serious rot going on. The brickmold needs to be pulled off and replaced for one, then you most likely have some rot going on behind that, and possibly termite damage if that has stayed damp.

First thing I'd do is rip off the brickmold that you see, then take off the first three sections of the siding to see what's going on. The metal corner brackets can be bought new or bent up on a brake. As far as replacing the bad siding, you can find something close that matches that will not rot. Then go around the rest of the building and start poking the lower boards with an ice pick to see how good or bad they are.
