I have 4' oc vaulted 5/12 trusses with a 16' width span of ceiling vaulted at 3/12 pitch, the run from peak to the top of wall is 12.5'. To keep weight down I seen at my vinyl siding distributor some nice looking beaded solid vinyl soffit that should look good for the ceiling in my garage. I know these trusses are not designed for any weight, but will this additional few pounds really affect the performance of the truss? My idea I have is to run metal hat channel (lighter than 2x4s) also horizontally the 16' across the bottom side of the trusses @ 2' centers or possibly 16" oc so the soffit can go from peak to wall in one piece and no overlaps. I will have a piece of flashing at the peak to hide the ends.
