Hello All, I bought a vise today and never heard of the brand called Prentiss N.Y. there's no model number any where I can see and I am hoping if you all can tell me a little about the vise? its jaws are 4.500 over all lenght is 19.000 and height is 9.000 I noticed that the back jaw has a pin in it and looks like it can be removed, before trying to remove the pin and not knowing if it screws out or pulls out I didnt want to mess with it and cause any damage. I collect a lot of Wiltons Morgans and Parkers but this is new to me.. thanks for the help..

Never heard of Prentiss? Me either must be cheap, better ship it to me for disposal. They are good quality vises! What did you pay?

I would like to shop where you do sir. that is an awesome vise and i didn't see the name on it like some do if you check Dayids.org, but it is a Prentiss.

the swivel jaw looks like it should release like your Wilton does. it is a little different thought. pull the dynamic jaw out all the way and grab a small bolt that can push it out from below upwards. it looks like it might just pull out with a little coaxing and don't hit it with anything hard.

good luck and again a nice vise for your ongoing collection. my 2 cents is Prentiss have more character than Wiltons and maybe because they are older. i'm guessing yours is from the 20's.

I've never seen a threaded pin on a Prentiss vise. it looks like there is a name right behind the swivel jaw and what does that say? how much does it weigh?

Prentiss is a quality vise. Yes, the pin should pull out and the rear jaw will then swivel.

If you don't like it I will gladly give you what you paid! And drive over and pick it up.

Great score. Not sure of model, my Prentiss No 3 has Prentiss marked in the same spot, than No. 3 beneath it. Not sure about yours, guessing very early model possibly. Very cool.

The pin is tapered and pulls out--in theory, anyway. It looks very rusty so you might try removing the swivel base and the front jaw, then hammer the pin out with a drift from the bottom side. SOAK it overnight with PB Blaster or equivalent.

Good price for that size Prentiss.

The last few months have been good at the swap meets here in AZ, I found a Wilton utility vise brand new NOS in the box 3.500 jaws model 643 1/2 blue gray color and he wants 100.00 but I like the bullets vises, if anyone wants it I can pass his number along.

I recently found a Prentiss 22 locally, but the price wasn't what I was looking for. I asked about it here and got some great advice, including a link to the vice Wiki for Prentiss vices:
http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Prentiss_Vise

And post #16 had a wonderful copy of an original store ad from 1923 that had the vice specs on it. I don't know how to copy the picture to this thread, but you can see it in the post here:

Great score!
