I've seen these pop up quite a few times here and there. I believe a couple people on GJ have posted them before. In all instances where I have come across this vice either in person or online (forums, ebay, etc.) I have not seen a definite answer. The only info that seems available is on the anvil "Patented August 20, 1912" "380A". There is some patent reference to the screw/nut, but nothing of the tool in its entirety.

There's one in my reprint of an 1897 Sears catalog for $1.12

Here is one on ebay right now;

And someone is still making these today;

ALL: the anvil on these vises is not nearly as sturdy as a nice piece of RR track. in my opinion this vise is more of a sit on the shelf and not a user. also for those of you that want to hit cold steel on a REAL anvil please don't because that is how you chip the edges. you should only hit hot steel on an anvil and the better blacksmiths even warm up their anvil some before using it. check out the blacksmith threads in the fabrication section and if you don't see your answers just ask questions and some of those guys might know because they are awesome and turn out some pretty cool stuff.

i've seen a lot of these vises with broken mounting feet, broken anvils or jaws and the screws usually don't have any grease on them so the threads on both male and female parts are probably a bit dicey. like i mentioned probably a piece of art more than a user.

Always appreciate everyone's info! Wasn't looking to buy it, just never seen one. That one on Ebay looks much nicer!

I saw something similar in my local CL. If I remember correctly the person wanted $150. No thanks.
