Vise for drilling stuff

Im drilling out some rivets on 2 upper control arms, I need a vise to hold them down will this one due? or bigger

I have a 6x3 workbench 3/4 plywood sheet countertop I got a vise but its not mounted right now, the workbench is new. Maybe another sheet of 3/4 to make it more sturdier? and bolt on the vise?

You want a better vise than that.Just buy a standard 4 or 6" vise,Record brand if you can find one and bolt it to your bench.That one you listed is for holding small items on your drill press,not the most versatile.

HF vices aren't great but they're not bad for the light user and in a pinch. I've got a 4" bolted to the corner of my bench and it works fine for me. Is a record better? Obviously. If the HF a decent user? Yes. I only buy certain stuff there. A lot of Chinese ****, a bit of decent stuff.

Yeah you guys are prob right, I just built this workbench 8 ft. and I got 3/4 on th top and I think its 7/16 on the bottom shelf top, Its all bolted up with 3/8 machine bolts, Prob just use my old vise nothing wrong with it , I think Im going to do what you did tojan19 bolt it to the corner. Thanks for the heads up

Freehand drill the rivets with a slightly undersized drill bit. Then use a chisel to shear off the rivet heads.

Charles thanks, I was thinking prob 1/8' size drill bit , what brand drill bits are good? Ive had some break off in the past. And another thing what about Dasco Pin punches and chisels any good?

Thats what I would use quick and clean. Check out the wilton vises very nice.

That HF page lists it as a "Titling Jaw Vise".

A multimillion dollar tool importing company and they can't even hire a proofreader.

Trackwelder, I got my eye on one of them at my local OSH store, the price is probably around $60 or $70 got to wait til I get more money maybe two weeks down the road. Right now I got this old alltrade vise sitting in my wheelbarrel just in case I need it though lol

I'd use what I had for now. If it's not too much of a pain, I'd add a second sheet of 3/4" to the top. A 3 foot deep bench could have some springy spots. The bargain store new wiltons might be the imports that are similar to the HF, and not the ones that TW was thinking about. If you have a little time, scan craigslist and garage sales. Even scrap yards will buy old tools for the scrap price and pull things like vises and charge just a little more.

If you've got a die grinder with a cut-off wheel, cut a slot or an X across the head of the rivet. Then cut the head off with a hand-held cold chisel. Using a hand-held drift punch or an air hammer with a punch head on it will drive the rivet body out.

I've used this method dozens of times on ball joints and rear spring hangers when lowering trucks.

The bargain store new wiltons might be the imports that are similar to the HF, and not the ones that TW was thinking about.

A 1765 Wilton will set you back about 400.00 new but is something that will last a lifetime and is very precise and easy to control. It has no slop, when you turn the handle the jaw moves unlike my old columbian that came with the place when I bought it. These are made in the USA with 60,000 psi castings compared to 30,000 psi (or less) on the cheaper ones so will not break as easy.
