Are the true original ''Vise Grip'' brand vise grips the good one's. There's a guy locally selling new in the package starting $6 a set. Has a lot to choose from.

Or is the Irwins, or other brands better. Thanks

Those are the tools made by Petersen Manufacturing Company in Dewitt, Nebraska prior to the Irwin buyout. At $6 a tool I'd pick up as many as you think you'll ever need.

Thanks guys.

But remember. That's ''Starting'' @ $6 a pair. I'm sure the bigger ones are more money.

What would be a good price for lets say a 8'' set. $12??

If they are at or under current retail prices for the new China ones, they would be a good deal in my opinion. Look at your current needs and estimate how much more you will need to cover the rest of your life. Then buy a few spares. Worst case is you give the extras out as Christmas gifts or give them to your kids in 30 years. Just store them somewhere dry.

The small-China ones seem to be on clearance at 6.99 a pair plus tax. I wouldn't be afraid to spend 10-12 bucks a pair for larger-US ones. I'd try and bundle a bunch for a lower cost.

Would you be willing to pick up six sets for me?
I could PayPal the funds for everything.

Please let me know.

Check what Petersen ones have gone for on ebay and possibly make an offer for his whole lot to re-sell.

Practically, the Petersens are good. The Irwin USA are good. The Irwin China are probably good, no experience with those. There are no-name knockoffs that aren't particularly good - I have one that seems kind of flexible and flimsy.

time for a simple tutorial. this pretty simple and straightforward. if there is a rivet in the handle holding the release lever it is almost guaranteed to be an import. if there is a roll pin in the release lever with and an allen screw opening in the adjustment screw it is a late mfg. irwin and pretty good, us made with some imported parts (most likely adjustment screw, spring and small parts). if it has the roll pin and the solid adjustment screw with no hex opening. that is the good stuff and it also should say peterson on it.

6 bucks and up? i am with the guy who said if you can buy them for about the same price as imports, go for it. they will always be worth that.

Buy them all. Every last one of them. No company currently makes locking pliers in the US. People drive around to tiny little country hardware stores and sort through their piles of dusty **** hoping to find these.

Offer to take everything he has for a discount.

+1 on buy them all. Whatever you don't need will be easy to sell at a profit. List them here on the classifieds or sell them on eBay.

Hey Cals, if you do get a bunch of these, I might want to buy a few too!

Only thing with the old Petersens, they DO RUST over time and pretty badly. I don't know that hoarding tools for life is such a great idea. Work great though. I have a few and also an SK 10" vice grips that Petersen surely made for SK, as it looks identical to my real Petersen 10". Anyone know SK did that once? But 30+ years on, it is pretty corroded and most of the original plating is long gone. - Paul

I paid $13 for an Irwin USA pair I found on the back of the rack at Sears last week, that was for a small pair.

No, not necessarily. I wouldn't get hung up on the USA made 'Vise Grips'. They're basically folded over sheet metal with a mediocre finish. They never were meant to be a high quality tool.
Here's a set (new in box) made in 1993.... the jaws don't even line-up on the larger WR10.
